Being nominated by a federal lawmaker is one of the steps in being appointed to a service academy, says the press release. Nominations are made from a pool of students who apply. Each of the four service academies—West Point, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy and Merchant Marine Academy—then select their enrollments from the nominees.

Woitalla, a senior at Northfield High, plays football, wrestles, and competes in track and field.
