ORIGINAL STORY, JUNE 17: A prominent Carleton College professor and expert on Asian affairs as died.

Carleton's news service announced the passing of Roy Grow—the Kellogg Professor of International Relations at the Northfield college—on its Twitter feed Monday afternoon.

Grow retired from Carleton this spring after teaching there since 1979. Click here to read his biography on Carleton's website.

In addition to his accomplishes at Carleton, he regularly appeared as a guest on the Minnesota Public Radio’s "Midday with Gary Eichten" program, where he contributed his knowledge of Asian affairs to the news of the day.

Click here to hear a program from Dec. 23, 2011, when Grow discussed the leadership transition in North Korea following the death of dictator Kim Jong Il. The program is on the MPR News website.

Here is a story about Grow’s retirement that appears on Carleton’s website:

Professor Roy Grow is retiring this spring, having taught at Carleton College since 1979. As Director of International Relations for many years, he has shown uncommon dedication to his students, not only on the Beijing off-campus program, but in having them at his house regularly for pizza or cookies, and keeping up with graduates all over the world. “Roy has an army of former students working in China and elsewhere in Asia, and has really made a difference in their lives,” notes colleague Norm Vig.

Roy specializes in the analysis of trade policy, international relations, and economic development of China, Japan and the U.S. He has advised American and Japanese firms involved in the China market, and written about Chinese enterprises, economic decision making, and Sino-foreign trade. He is frequently interviewed on MPR regarding current events and policy in Asia.

He has taken almost 300 students to China during eight Beijing programs from 1990 to 2009. Along with Roy, Mary Lewis and son Lewis, students have traveled in China and studied economic, political and social change.
