Jonathan Odell, finalist for the Minnesota Book Award in 2013 for his
novel The Healing, will speak at the Northfield Public Library on
Tuesday, October 29, at 7:00 pm in the library meeting room. The talk is part of a Minnesota Book Awards
Author Tour, sponsored by Selco. The Healing is set on a cotton
plantation, owned by the Satterfield family, in the Mississippi Delta. Mistress Satterfield takes a special interest
in Granada, a slave girl, after her own daughter dies of cholera. When slave Polly Shine, a healer, is
purchased, she makes Granada her apprentice against the wishes of the
mistress. Upheaval on the plantation
follows when the slaves become healed.
Odell grew up in Mississippi and
now lives in Minnesota. His first
novel. The View from Delphi,
Published in
2004, is set in Mississippi during the beginning of the Civil Rights
