Registration for Fall Community Ed Classes Under Way

This year you can test your mettle at trap shooting, traditional Japanese archery or strengthen your core with gourds (really).

The school year is just about to begin, and the Northfield District has something for everyone, even adults with a yen for Samurai-style marksmanship.

Registration for youth and adult recreation began last Friday. Here is a small sampling of some of the offerings this fall.

Kyudo
Kyudo, Japanese longbow archery, has a long tradition in Japanese history in both militaristic and ceremonial venues. Today's kyudo is a non-competitive, introspective process to shooting that helps focus one's mind and body on the simple act of shooting a bow.

Pump(kin) It Up
Come together as a family for the most unique and fun workout class this fall! This class will use pumpkins like medicine balls to strengthen the body through individual and partner stretching and toning. You will put your new skills into action through a few high-energy games. All youth under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring a towel or mat for each attendee. Pumpkins will be provided and can be taken home for carving.

Unbelievably, such a class is not without precedent. The Boston Herald documented a similar workout class in 2011 ("Sometimes it takes a pumpkin to cure a couch potato").

Introduction to Trap Shooting
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to shoot clay pigeons out of the air? This is the perfect opportunity. A Cannon River Sportsmen’s Club member will provide one-on-one instruction. Firearms, shells, clays and instructor provided. Call Rob McGillivray at 507.645.4254 for details or appointment. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and must possess a firearms safety certificate. Call to schedule an appointment between June and August.

Quilting, Make it Modern!
What gives a quilt a modern look? Learn about the new techniques and styles of quilting, basic sewing skills, common quilting terms, cutting fabric, chain-piecing and how to finish a quilt. You will leave class with a 57" by 75" quilt project that will add beauty and comfort to your home for years.
