Second Candidate Files for Ward 4 City Council Seat

Jessica Peterson White filed on Wednesday to win the seat she was appointed to fill last fall. Richard Esse was the first to submit candidacy papers on Tuesday.

The second Northfield resident in two days has filed papers to run in this fall's Ward 4 Northfield City Council special election. And, she’s a familiar face at City Hall.

Jessica Peterson White,  507 Washington St., filed on Wednesday, says an email from Northfield City Clerk Deb Little.

Peterson White has served on the council since last fall, when she was appointed to fill the Ward 4 seat vacated by Patrick Ganey.

On Tuesday, Richard Esse, 109 Orchard St. N., was the first person to file for election.

The filing period for the special election opened July 30. It runs until 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13. The special election is Tuesday, Nov. 5.

The winner of the election will serve as the ward’s representative on the City Council for one year.

Candidates can file an Affidavit of Candidacy with Deb Little, city clerk, at City Hall, 801 Washington St., Northfield.

Here are the qualifications to run for office in Northfield:

• Be qualified to vote.

• Be at least 21 years of age on the date he or she would assume office.

• Be a resident of the city and of any ward he or she seeks to represent, or will become a resident therein at least 30 days before the election.

• Have no other affidavit on file for any other elected office.

• Pay a $5 filing fee.

• File an Affidavit of Candidacy form in the office of the City Clerk.

• Complete and file the public disclosure statement prescribed by the city's ethics ordinance.

• Complete and file Campaign Finance Reports.

After this fall’s election, the Ward 4 seat again will be up for election in November 2014.
