Northfield Hospital Names New CEO

Steve Underdahl formally accepted the Board of Directors’ offer of the position Friday. He will begin his work on Tuesday, June 11.

Editor’s Note: This is a press release from Northfield Hospital and Clinics. Steve Underdahl has been named the new president and CEO of Northfield Hospital & Clinics (NH&C). He formally accepted the Board of Directors’ offer of the position Friday. He will begin his work at NH&C on Tuesday, June 11. Underdhal comes to Northfield from Mayo Clinic Health System, Albert Lea and Austin, where he most recently held the position of Vice President of Operations. Prior to that, he served as hospital administrator for the Albert Lea hospital from 1999 to 2012. He has a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Bethel College. Northfield Hospital Locked Down for Two Hours on Sunday

A 24-year-old man was arrested for allegedly calling a threat to the Emergency Department.

Northfield Hospital was placed on lockdown early Sunday afternoon after a threat was called to the Emergency Department. The Pioneer Press says the hospital was locked down from about 12:30 p.m. until 2:20, when a 24-year-old man from Biwabik, MN, was arrested at a relative's home in Farmington. Mary Quinn Crow, the hospital's interim president and CEO, told the Pioneer Press that people entering and exiting the hospital during that time were escorted. Northfield's interim police chief, Chuck Walerius, told the Pioneer Press the suspect "apparently was upset over treatment that was denied or administered to him" when he was a patient at the hospital on Friday. Northfield Hospital Will Spend $400k to Sponsor City's Recreation Program

The hospital is committing to fund Northfield's recreation program for the next four years.

Northfield Hospital & Clinics will spend more than $400,000 over the next four years to fund the City of Northfield’s recreation program for the next four years. The hospital's Board of Directors said it will guarantee $107,000 for 2013 and 2014 and the donation to $110,315 for 2015 and 2016, provided the hospital’s net operating income is at least $2 million. The hospital has more about the decision in a press release: The Board of Directors approved its intent to make the donation at its February meeting and approved a formal document outlining the terms of the donation March 21. Northfield Hospital & Clinics underwrote the city’s recreation program in 2012 and wanted to provide the city some certainty of its commitment going forward. …

PHOTOS: St. Dominic Cashes Out Big

Student Volunteerism at St. Dominic School raises funds for Northfield Hospital Breast Care Center, funds matched.

St. Dominic School hosted a special program today to recognize the efforts of the 6th and 7th grade classes who for the last month or so have led the entire school on a fund raising drive to raise money to benefit breast cancer research and care. Anna and Jennifer from the 7th grade class announced that the results of the effort raised $1,020. When presented with the school's gift Kari Elliason, who is both a St. Dominic Parent and the Breast Care Coordinator at Northfield Hospital, and  Dr. Jose Fulco, Center Director, surprised the students by announcing that the money was matched by not only the Center, but the doctors who work there, also. Added to the match from Team Vic-Torious, the final total gift to the Breast Cancer Care Center …

Northfield Hospital Long Term Care Center has joined Stratis Health in a campaign to ensure every nursing home resident receives the highest quality care. The Long Term Care Center will be a collaborative partner in a campaign called Acting Together to Achieve Excellence (ATTAX). Its aim is to introduce Minnesota nursing homes to quality and performance improvement practices designed to attack and eliminate healthcare acquired conditions and to improve resident satisfaction. 60 Dead: Influenza Continues to Plague Minnesota

Nearly 1,900 Minnesotans have been hospitalized because of the flu.

The influenza outbreak of 2012-13 has now killed 60 Minnesotans and hospitalized 1,842, according to information released Thursday by the Minnesota Department of Health. The department’s second weekly report in 2013 on the flu outbreak more than doubles the number of reported deaths in the state; which totaled 27 last week. The total number of deaths is now nearly as high as the outbreak of 2009-10, which killed 67 Minnesotans. The number of flu-related hospitalizations actually exceeds the total of 2009-10. Northfield Hospital & Clinics has reported that they, too, have been seeing an influx of patients for the widespread outbreak of influenza.  According to a Fox 9 news report, 88 percent of the deaths were patients age 65 or older, …

UPDATED: Flu Rates Skyrocket in Minnesota—27 Deaths, 1,100 Hospitalized

Recent influenza reports have drastically increased since reports last month.

Statistics now include week 1 of 2013, which was Dec. 30, 2012, through Jan. 5, 2013. This flu season is proving brutal in Minnesota, with the Minnesota Department of Health now reporting 27 deaths in the state, including 23 that officials have been able to confirm as flu-related since Dec. 30. Since the start of the influenza season, 1,121 people have been hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza, according to the MDH reports for the 2012-2013 season.
