DFL Senate District 58 is planning for its annual August fundraising picnic, and it looks like this year it will be bigger than ever. Steve Quist, the district's chair, is working with the DFL District 56 chair to combine picnics this year into a blowout event at Lac Lavonne Park on the border of Burnsville and Lakeville. We have "hopes of getting a much larger crowd, and a couple big name politicians," he wrote in an email to Senate District 58 Democrats. Twin Cities Democrats think the state's most controversial issue–the amendment to the state's constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman–will fall flat on Tuesday, making Minnesota the first state to vote down such an amendment. In our survey of DFL influencers–local politicians and party activists–the Democrats also believe having the amendment issue on the ballot will be a boost for President Barack Obama, as he looks to defeat former Gov. Mitt Romney in Tuesday's presidential election. Of the 100 influencers who volunteered to take our survey, 24 responded to our "flash" poll, issued last Friday.
