As America readies to to honor our armed service veterans, we thought we'd look back at some of our coverage of the federal holiday.
With Veterans Day falling on a Sunday this year, the annual Bridgewater Elementary Veterans Day Program is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday. The event is open to all veterans; there will be a brief social hour following with cards, coffee and cookies. As America readies to to honor our armed service veterans, we thought we'd look back at some of our coverage of the federal holiday. Here's a series we ran last year leading up to Veterans Day that looked at the membership challenges the Northfield VFW is facing. In 1946, Howard Hong left Northfield for war-ravaged Europe. The young St. Olaf philosophy professor, who would later become internationally known as a scholar and translator of the Danish philosopher Kierkegaard, had spent the war working at prisoner of war camps in Missouri and Iowa. During that time, Hong also became the owner of an iconic 1942 Willys Army Jeep, a veteran of the Normandy invasion, which he purchased at a U.S. Army auction in Paris. Back home in Minnesota, the Jeep became the Hong family vehicle. In the summer, it …

There are alternatives for those who are single, or just hate the whole cards-and-candy routine.
When it comes to Valentine’s Day, people fall into two groups: The lovesick, and those who are, well, sick of the whole thing. Maybe you’re romantically challenged and would rather not be reminded of it. Or, maybe, you’re one of those people who thinks the self-determined Day of Romance has devolved into so much over-the-top pomp and circumstance. Regardless, there are plenty of you out there. The good news: If this year’s V-Day will be a decidedly solo affair, Northfield Patch has put together a list of alternatives for you on what’s become one of our country’s most commercialized holidays: 1. Anytime Fitness, Curves, Northfield Area Family YMCA, Northfield Athletic Club, Snap Fitness—While couples are filling their faces and smiling …

It's been nearly 10 years since the United States changed forever following terrorist attacks on American soil. In remembrance of 9/11, Northfielders will gather together at 7:40 a.m. Sunday for a ceremony at Riverside Lions Park. At 7:46 a.m.—the time the first of two planes flew into the World Trade Center in New York—the American flag will be raised at the park. All flags should be raised to half-staff that day, according to Northfield Veterans of Foreign War Post Commander Bill Murphy. Murphy said the ceremony will be brief, not expected to last more than 30 minutes. The ceremony will include a prayer, a song, a guest speaker and a 21-gun salute. IF YOU GO WHAT: 9/11 Remembrance WHEN: Approximately 7:40 a.m. Sunday, though it's advised…
