Veterans Day 2012: Honoring Those Who Served

As America readies to to honor our armed service veterans, we thought we'd look back at some of our coverage of the federal holiday.

With Veterans Day falling on a Sunday this year, the annual Bridgewater Elementary Veterans Day Program is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday. The event is open to all veterans; there will be a brief social hour following with cards, coffee and cookies. As America readies to to honor our armed service veterans, we thought we'd look back at some of our coverage of the federal holiday. Here's a series we ran last year leading up to Veterans Day that looked at the membership challenges the Northfield VFW is facing. It's good to see this coverage of local veterans news in Northfield and to remember veterans in general. Pick Up Please has a great infographic with a lot of meaningful facts and stats about veterans. One way to remember the sacrifices of our veterans is to learn more about them. Historic Faces of Dakota County

Dakota County Vietnam Veterans: Lakeville's Bruce McRae, Airforce Reserve with Operation Babylift

As part of the re-dedication of the Dakota County Historical Society's expanded Vietnam veteran exhibit scheduled for Nov. 17, Patch will feature three stories from the collection.

Bruce McRae, a 1970 graduate of the Air Force Academy, joined the 8th Airlift Squadron at McChord Air Force Base (AFB) in Washington after completing navigator and C-141 training at Air Force bases in California and Oklahoma. McRae was trained to operate a C-141 Starlifter, a large 4-engine aircraft designed to transport war material, equipment and personnel. READ THE SECOND STORY: A Change for the Ages: Northfield VFW Ladies Auxiliary Challenged by Aging Members READ THE THIRD STORY: A Change for the Ages: Northfield VFW Men's Auxiliary Keeps Patriotism Alive Charlie Wells, an army veteran who served in Korea in 1952, has been a member of Northfield VFW Post 4393 since 1961.  He has taken on the role of post commander four times during the past 50 years, but now the post he has served so loyally for decades is losing its momentum. “Our membership is dwindling,” …

Thanks Roberta, and thanks again Corey and Anna. Through my new knowledge of online resources and Patch, I have been able to reach out a little more to my generation and now the younger veterans. Hopefully we will soon be able to start growing the Veterans of Foreign Wars in northfield so we can keep serving the community.   more ›
