St. Dominic School Principal Vicki Kalina Marvin dressed up like a duck and danced on the roof of the school on Friday as a reward to the very hard work students put into the school's Oct. 12 marathon. Classes gathered beneath the roofline of the cafeteria and danced along with the music once Marvin arrived. The winter season will be a little more colorful this year. The City of Northfield Streets Department has dropped off two snowplows at St. Dominic School for fifth- and seventh-grade students to paint in a way to represent the school. St. Dominic art teacher Kelly Lynn Stanton-Nutt started her students on the plows this week and plans to have them finish the project next week. Streets and Parks Supervisor T.J. Heinricy said that it's likely a few more plows could be dropped off for St. Dominic students to paint. He said it's a great collaboration that get the school's imprint into the community. Heinricy said a similar idea with Northfield Public Schools elementary schools didn't pan out this year but he's hopeful they can work out …

Saturday's Imagination Celebration runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Northfield Arts Guild currently has its gallery dedicated to student artwork from Northfield's K-12 schools. Participating schools include Bridgewater Elementary, Greenvale Park Elementary, Sibley Elementary, Prairie Creek Community School, St. Dominic School, Northfield Middle School, ARTech, Northfield Area Learning Center and Northfield High School. Home-schooled students also contributed. The gallery, which runs through April 28, builds up to Saturday's annual Imagination Celebration. Saturday's event, which is run 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., offers a free day of art activities and performances at the NAG. A mother of a student at Greenvale Park Elementary on Monday notified Principal David Craft that on three occasions last week two unknown men played basketball with students participating in the afterschool program KidVentures, which takes place at the school. Several Northfield students recently competed—and placed—in the 2012 Spring Chess Tournament hosted by South Central Service Cooperative and Mankato Community Education/Recreation Sibley Elementary's Peter Hillmann tied for first in the elementary division and tied for first in the second-grade level. Sibley's Collin Thomas-Green tied with Peter for first in the elementary division and first in the second-grade level. Students at the Northfield school took part in the Minnesota Marathon for Nonpublic Schools Friday morning.
St. Dominic School students pounded the pavement for dollars Friday morning. Nearly 200 students, as well as volunteers and family members of all ages, walked the trails surrounding Bridgewater Elementary School and the Rachel Carson Nature Area to raise money for their school. Principal Vicki Kalina Marvin, who laced up her sneakers to join the walkers, proclaimed the walk a success. “It’s going very well,” she said as she stopped for a moment at a check point along Jefferson Parkway in front of Bridgewater Elementary. “There is so much energy, so much enthusiasm.” St. Dominic students are well versed when it comes to fundraising walks.
