Northfield business owners urge residents to shop local this holiday season.
In recent years, Black Friday has become synonymous with long lines, massive discounts and the big box stores that offer them. But now, main street America is staking its claim in the retail madness of Black Friday weekend. Nov. 26 is the second annual Small Business Saturday, which was launched last year by American Express to support local businesses during the holiday season. “I think small businesses are the backbone of our society,” said Lucy Sweitzer, the owner of Anna’s Closet. “In Northfield, we are a small business community.” Local businesses enrich their communities simply by existing. During the past two decades, small businesses have created 65 percent of net new jobs and for every $100 spent in locally owned, independent …

Northfield Patch recaps the happenings of the past week.
With a shortened work and school week for many, the past seven days were busy ones for Northfielders. On Monday, the Northfield School Board addressed its financial future, reviewed its fiscal year and updated its anti-bullying policy to now include provisions regarding cyber-bullying, the act of bullying by means of technological devices. Though the weather has been quite chilly, water that has turned to ice already is far from safe. Sheriff Richard Cook said it's still too early to venture out on Rice County waters because formed ice is far from thick enough to handle the weight of people. The Northfield Police Department on Wednesday reported that a man allegedly tried to abduct two Greenvale Park Elementary students after school …

Plenty of shoppers swept through downtown Northfield on Saturday.
Well, that was a bit different than Friday. Downtown Northfield was relatively vacant during the annual Black Friday shopping extravaganza, but hustle and bustle returned to Division Street a day later for Small Business Saturday. Many businesses—Fine Threads, The Rare Pair and The Sketchy Artist, to name a few—had deep discounts on merchandise, as was evident by filled stores and packed downtown parking.
