Northfield Nonprofits Share Their Stories for Give to the Max Day

We asked and they shared. Here are stories of Northfield-area nonprofits who are asking for your support.

For more than a week now we've been running Local Voices submissions from area nonprofit leaders to help them promote their organizations ahead of Give to the Max Day. Each year, a 24-hour period—known as Give to the Max Day, which starts at midnight Thursday, Nov. 15, this year—allows for everyone to flex their philanthropic muscle and offers hourly $1,000 bonuses for organizations receiving donations during that time. One $10,000 "golden ticket" bonus will be handed out as well. Also, through local donations, five Northfield-only golden tickets worth $1,000 will be handed out to area nonprofits. Last year, 47,539 people donated roughly $13.6 million to 4,000 nonprofits statewide during the day. As promised, we told those who submitted …

Letter to the Editor

LTE: Pit Bull Breed Not Bad; Dogs Need Training

Have a letter for the editor? Email it to corey.butler@patch.com.

To the editor: Hello, I have written a response to the anti-Pit Bull blog posted last week. It is too large for the comment section. On September 9th, 2011, our small family lost an integral member, our beloved dog Cassie.  She was the first dog of a young couple just starting out.  As a result she saw everything we saw, traveled everywhere we went, experienced every heartbreak we experienced, and rejoiced with us during the good times.  Cassie was an accomplished obedience dog - capturing multiple titles and even being ranked nationally.  She was a dream in the ring: smart, driven, and most of all devoted.  When we decided to start fostering homeless dogs, she was always at the ready.  She cuddled with puppies, corrected their wrongs, and…

There may be some misunderstanding - I am not anti-pit bull. I am anti- irresponsible owner. Yes, all dogs can bite, yes, all dogs can be aggressive. However, because of the reputation of pit bulls - owners, like Anne V. mentioned, need to be dedicated and have the skills to offer structure. Different dogs, different needs. Shirley   more ›

Spotlight from the Shelter: Hagrid

Hagrid, a domestic medium-hair cat, is looking for a home.

Hagrid is a big and beautiful, orange domestic medium-hair cat at Prairie's Edge Humane Society. We estimate Hagrid to be about 8 years old. Hagrid is as gigantic and lovable as his namesake. He weighs a whopping 20 pounds and could stand to lose a LOT of that weight. Hagrid seems very friendly and personable; he's glad to visit with you and let you pet him. He was turned in to us by his former owner because they were allergic to him. They described Hagrid as mellow and liking his quiet time. We have a suspicion that if he weighed a few pounds less he would have more energy to enjoy playtime instead of nap-time. Hagrid has been neutered, is front declawed, is current on his vaccinations, has been given routine de-worming and ear mite …

Spotlight from the Shelter: Kithicor

Kithicor, a black-and-white domestic short-hair tuxedo kitten, is looking for a home.

Kithicor is a dapper black-and-white domestic short-hair tuxedo kitten. We estimate Kithicor to be about 6 months old. Kithicor is a very friendly and affectionate boy with lots of personality. He loves to "ham it up" for the camera when we have taken his picture and he seems to have a fun and playful spirit. Kithicor is a tuxedo cat with mostly black fur but white placed just right so it kind of looks like he's wearing a, you guessed it, tuxedo! Kithicor was turned in to us by his former owner because they had too many animals to give him the attention and care that he deserves. His former owner did not indicate whether he has lived with children before so we don't know about his behavior toward them. Kithicor is a medium-sized boy now at…
