The Big 9 voted to add two new member schools starting in 2014-15.
The Big 9 Conference's executive board voted this morning to admit Northfield High School. The decision, announced by the Minnesota State High School League on Twitter, comes none too soon for Northfield as schools continue to flee the sinking ship of the Missota Conference. Northfield had been a member of the Big 9 until the late 1960s, but much has changed in the last 40-plus years. “When Northfield left the Big 9 there were zero girls sports,” Northfield activities director Tom Graupmann told the Northfield News in March. "Automatically we’ve doubled what we’ve done since the early 1970s. “We didn’t have nearly as many sports for the boys either. We have a lot more stuff going on now. We’re spending a lot more time on the road than what…

Dan Kasper, the father of the 19-year-old Northfield High School graduate found murdered Tuesday in her boyfriend's Tempe, Ariz., apartment, described his daughter's death as "like lightning out of the clear blue sky." Rebecca Kasper had started dating Luis Soltero, 22, in the fall and brought him home to Northfield for Christmas. "I got a good chance to know him and we didn't see anything that would indicate something like this would happen," Dan Kasper told CBS affiliate KPHO. "He was quiet, laid back and easy going, seemed like a good kid." Kasper's body was found on Tuesday, her face beaten beyond recognition with a dumbell, after Soltero brought her driver's license in to police and told them to go to his apartment.
