The Raiders, seeded fifth in the 2AAAA tournament, lost 34-27 to No. 4-seeded Chaska, who they lost to in overtime last week.
As it did many times this year, the Northfield football team kept its first-round section game on Tuesday close but came up just a bit short when time expired. The Raiders scored their first victory of the season.
After fumbling the ball away on the opening kickoff, the Raiders turned things around beating the Wingers 41-21. Northfield rolled out to a 28-7 halftime lead and forced Red Wing to score on long, time-consuming drives in the second half. The Raiders ended a late scoring threat with an interception with three minutes left in the game. Northfield's first victory of the year impoved the Raiders to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the Missota Conference. Red Wing fell to 1-5 overall and 0-5 in the conference. Northfield will finish its regular season with two road games, the first coming Oct. 12 at Chaska, which rolled over Holy Angels, 51-14, on Friday. The Northfield Raiders let a lead slip away Friday night in Shakopee (2-3) and failed to secure their first win of the season, falling to the Sabers 32-29. After Shakopee kicked a field goal with seconds left in the game for the go-ahead score, the Raiders (0-5) tried a little razzle-dazzle on the kick return but fumbled the ball, which Shakopee recovered and marked the end of the game. Northfield led 22-14 at the half after opening up a 15-0 in the first quarter. Shakopee scored in the third quarter and successfully completed a two-point conversation, as the Raiders did following their first touchdown, to knot the game at 22-22. The Raiders never quit fighting in a loss against the potent Chanhassen Storm on Friday night at Memorial Field. With a late score in the second quarter, the Raiders were trailing 35-14 at the half. The Northfield defense had a big stop on Chanhassen's first drive in the third quarter and marched down the field to score a touchdown and bring them within two scores. Chanhassen scored again late in the fourth quarter to effectively put themselves out of reach, but Northfield answered by driving down the field again for another score and a final of 42-27. Nathon Preston rushed for more than 200 yards and four touchdowns as New Prague dropped Northfield, 48-37, in a Missota Conference matchup Friday night in New Prague. The Trojans were down by three points, 24-21, at halftime before Preston and his teammates took control in the second half. According to unofficial statistics, Preston finished with 24 carries for 216 yards. Devon Walker had a big game on the ground for the Raiders, rushing for more than 140 yards, according to unofficial figures. A Northfield Raiders football rally came up short for the second time in as many weeks on Friday night at Memorial Field. With four and a half minutes left in the game against visiting Farmington, it looked like Northfield was on their way to their second straight home loss to start the season. But up 27-13, the Tigers had a bad snap in the end zone, which was recovered by Northfield for a touchdown. Following the successful extra point attempt, the Raiders recovered an onside kick and drove down the field in the final minutes of the game, trailing by seven points.
