Sen. Dahle, Other Lawmakers Push for Crucial Investments in Minnesota Nursing Homes, Long-Term Care

Nursing home rates have been frozen for the past four years and the Elderly Waiver program has been cut by double digits over that same time frame.

Senator Kevin Dahle (DFL-Northfield) is authoring legislation to increase funding for nursing homes and senior home care services in Minnesota. This issue has wide support, including members from both parties and both chambers, as well as various interest groups.   “The legislation provides for a much-needed 5% raise for those individuals caring for our seniors and establishes a long-term care consultation team,” said Senator Dahle. “We cannot be blind to the long-term care crisis in Minnesota. By doing so we disregard the health and wellbeing of our families and friends. We must take action.”   Nursing home rates have been frozen for the past four years and the Elderly Waiver program has been cut by double digits over that same time frame…

Sen. Dahle Leads Statewide Working Group on Assessments

Sen. Kevin Dahle (D-Northfield) represents District 20.

As the point person for Student Assessment and Testing on the Education Committee, I have begun the process of reviewing the State’s standardized testing environment. Minnesota continues to have one of the best track records in the country for student learning and achievement, but ballooning government imposition of standardized testing has begun to take its toll. Minnesota students take several redundant tests every year, wasting time, money, and often disrupting their learning environment.      For years, teachers and students have grown more and more concerned about the need to ―teach to the test,‖ rather than to student needs. Math testing in particular has become a burden to students: a single score on a single test on a single day …

Sen. Dahle Authors Legislation on Mental Health Training in Schools

Senate File 260 proposes initiative to recognize mental illness in children.

As part of a larger push by DFL Senators to address mental health issues in Minnesota, Senator Kevin Dahle has authored legislation (S.F. 260) that would aid in identifying the early warning signs of mental illness in children and adolescents. The bill adapts teacher licensure renewal requirements to include instruction on a more in-depth understanding of mental illness in students. “Mental illness has received a lot of attention recently, especially in its connection to violence; the long-term solution to this problem lies with our kids,” said Sen. Dahle. “Though the vast majority of students with mental illness never become violent, it is critical that teachers are given the training they need to provide for students with additional …
