Northfield Goes Retro on Google Maps

Just in time for April Fool's Day, Google Maps announced an "8-bit upgrade."

The Google jokesters are at it again. Check out downtown Northfield as viewed on the Google Maps "8-bit upgrade." The retro Nintendo on-the-street view is looking down Division Street from Fifth Street. The overview shot shows some of our favorite places, like Ames Park, Just Food Co-op and J. Grundy's Rueb 'n' Stein. Be sure to take a tour of Northfield in 8-bit magic and get in on the fun. Take a screen shot of your favorite Northfield location and upload it to this article. We'll see if we can guess where it is. Be sure to follow Northfield Patch on Twitter, "Like" us on Facebook, and sign up for our newsletters, which send you updates about stories, breaking news, announcements, events and blogs on our site.

VIDEO: Northfield Historical Society's Winter Scream

It may not be that cold, but folks are ready to kiss winter goodbye.

The wrath of winter may not be what it was a year ago, but folks still descended on Bridge Square on Saturday to participate in Northfield Historical Society'ssecond annual Winter Scream. The fundraiser offered ice cream, donated by Hogan Brothers Acoustic Café, and chili, donated by J. Grundy's Rueb 'N' Stein, for a $5 donation. Highlighting the event was the communal singing of Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It," but with a wintry twist of seasonally appropriate lyrics. In an attempt to bid winter farewell, these lyrics were sung: We’ve got no friends in Phoenix We’ve blown through all our Kleenex We’re not going to take it, any more. We’ve braved the snow and ice We’ve shivered more than twice We’re not going to take it, anymore…

An Institution: Grundy's Celebrates 30 Years

Joe Grundhoefer has owned the local bar and grill since 1982.

Local business owner Joe Grundhoefer rung in 2012 by celebrating a very special anniversary.  On Jan. 1, 1982, Grundhoefer purchased the bar on the corner of Fifth and Division streets and reopened it as Grundy’s Corner Bar and Grill. With that, a Northfield institution was born. “It’s quite rewarding,” said Grundhoefer, reflecting on his 30 years in business. During the past three decades, Grundy’s has seen its share of changes. Grundhoefer, who co-owns Grundy’s with his wife Jodi, tended bar at the corner watering hole for five years before taking over as owner at the age of 23. Although he originally purchased only the space at 501 Division St. S., today the restaurant occupies two additional neighboring addresses as well—503 and 505 …

VIDEO: Fourth Annual Northfield Historical Society Outlaw Run

The Outlaw Run retraced part of the route the James-Younger Gang took following a failed bank raid in Northfield. The event serves as a fundraiser for the NHS.

With the sun shining and the dust settling from the Bank Raid Re-enactment on Saturday morning, about 140 motorcycles and 160 participants left downtown Northfield en masse for the Northfield Historical Society's fourth annual Outlaw Run. The Outlaw Run retraced part of the route the James-Younger Gang took following a failed bank raid in Northfield. The event serves as a fundraiser for the NHS. On Sept. 7, 1876, the gang, led by Jesse and Frank James and the Younger brothers, attempted a bank raid on the First National Bank of Northfield. While the raid was in progress, the townspeople rounded up their firearms and fought back. When the fighting stopped, two Northfielders had been ruthlessly murdered by the gang, and two of the outlaws …
