Bridge Square is a little busier than usual Wednesday morning. T.J. Heinricy, Northfield's streets and parks supervisor, said he has a crew working on the power source beneath Bridge Square. The city is replacing service lines from Northfield Liquors to Bridge Square. Heinricy said the work was necessary after last fall's historical flood.

City officials say the Cannon River is down another 2 inches Tuesday from Monday.
No news is good news. City officials have ceased flood-related media updates for the time being because the Cannon River continues to recede and is not currently a serious threat to Northfielders. "It continues to come down," said Chuck Walerius, deputy police chief, on Tuesday. He said the water level has dropped 2 inches since Monday and is down considerably since the Cannon peaked a week ago. Using a stick gauge at the Northfield Safety Center, which remains protected by sandbags, Walerius said the water measures at 8 inches. A week ago, when water was level with the west-side Riverwalk wall in downtown, the gauge measured at 2 feet 9 inches. The city has reopened the west-side Riverwalk after closing it because of the water. The east …

City officials on Thursday met with media members to talk about flood preparation. A public meeting is 6:30 p.m. Monday at Northfield City Hall.
City officials on Thursday said it’s too early to say how hard—or little—a spring flood could hit Northfield. Public Works Director Katy Gehler says the city is taking the necessary steps to protect its assets should the Cannon River rise this spring. “We’re getting prepared and monitoring the situation,” she said. But predicting what’s to come is the hardest guesswork there is. Gehler said myriad factors affect potential flooding, including saturation of the ground, logjams, amount of snow on the ground and precipitation. Northfield Public Safety Director Mark Taylor said the city has invested in monitoring devices to track water levels in Northfield and south of town on the Cannon River. While not necessarily high tech, Taylor says the …

An estimated $4.6 million in damage was caused to campus by September's flood.
Carleton College senior offensive lineman Brad Eckelmann will get over the loss to Saint John's University last month. The All-American football player was just glad he had the opportunity to play his final home game at, well, home. "That was fantastic," Eckelmann said of playing at Laird Stadium for the last time. "That's the game I'll probably remember." Carleton College wasn't spared from the late September flood that left part of downtown Northfield under water for many days. An estimated $4.6 million in damage was caused on campus from floodwaters, including Laird Stadium, home of the Knights. While the facility was repaired, the Knights were forced to play two "home" games across town at St. Olaf College. Representatives from the …
