Do you have something to say? Put it in writing and email corey.butler@patch.com to get signed up.
We received a nice variety of blogs come through Patch's Local Voices section this past week. Here is a sample: • Hayes Scriven let us know about the Northfield Historical Society’s volunteers of the year. • Sandy Vesledahl updated us on plans for this year’s Walk for the Animals. • Bill Murphy provided a history behind the Northfield Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxilliary’s distribution of “Buddy” Poppy downtown. • And in a popular post this week, Susan Hvistendahl informed us that the bust of Carleton’s Favorite Poet, Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller, would appear in tonight’s episode of television's "Desperate Housewives." Read those and more great posts by clicking on the links below. • Debby Larsen, Devyn Gardner are …

A new study shows 55 percent of teens feel they are more aware of other people's needs as a result of social media sites.
I was one of the first of my friends and family members to jump on the Facebook bandwagon when it was launched for college students in February 2004. It was the talk of the campus. My roommate and I would peruse our pages for hours: chatting, poking, adding friends and checking out the latest gossip. Sadly, I remember the first time you were able to add multiple photos. It was thrilling. These days my use of social media has expanded to include Twitter and other outlets, however my engagement in the sphere has definitely declined. But, I'm no longer a teenager, and I'm of the generation that remembers the Internet becoming the "new thing." While I may not be as engaged as I once was, this is apparently not the case for most teens. A new …

What's appropriate discipline?
In five days, more than 21 million people have watched a video of a father ranting about his 15-year-old daughter's disrespect towards him ... and then he shoots her laptop. While upgrading his daughter's computer, he finds a Facebook message (for the second time) complaining about him, her step-mom, and chores she's asked to do. "I'm not your slave," he reads from her message. As he replies in the video: "Maybe a few kids can take something away from this … If you’re so disrespectful to your parents and yourself as to post this kind of thing on Facebook, you’re deserving of some tough love. Today, my daughter is getting a dose of tough love." The dad then posted the video on Facebook and, from there, it has spread quite fast across the …

Who drives you craziest? Those who overshare? The chronic complainer? The vague poster? Take our poll!
Real Simple magazine has spent this week focusing on improving online behavior. Part of the initiative came from the results of a survey the magazine did about social media, and specifically Facebook. One of the most interesting questions their survey asked was "What's the most annoying kind of Facebook update?" We'd love your thoughts on this question as well. Take our poll and add your comments!

How does Northfield stack up on the Internet?
There’s no question that social media has changed the way the world communicates. Why converse when you can tweet, "like" something or comment? Facebook has more than 500 million active users who spend more than 700 billion minutes a month on the site, according to Social2B. More than 200 million active users access Facebook through mobile devices. As for Twitter, there are 200 million Twitter users and 95 million tweets are written each day. President Barack Obama, Gov. Mark Dayton and many other politicians use social networking sites to keep their constituents in the loop. Many departments from the State of Minnesota use social media to inform residents of road closures, accidents and other pertinent information. But have Twitter, …

Juan Jose Lazaro-Ojeda, 32, pleaded guilty on Monday for using Facebook to convince a 12-year-old girl to engage in sexual activities with him, according to a criminal complaint filed with Rice County District Court.
A man who was deported to Mexico this year for being in America illegally is back in Rice County after being extradited to face a criminal charge of electronically soliciting a child. Juan Jose Lazaro-Ojeda, 32, on Monday pleaded guilty in Rice County District Court to using Facebook for three months to try to convince a 12-year-old girl to engage in sexual activities with him. He was living in Northfield at the time of the communication. The girl went to the Northfield Safety Center in March 2011 to tell police of the sexually-charged messages, which she said happened both in person and on the Internet, according to a criminal complaint filed with the court. She told police that the man, who was identified as the father or stepfather of a…

The presentation aimed to give students the tools to avoid digital dangers.
It’s widely known that there is a lot of personal information available on the Internet. But just how much could be found out about a person based on a few pieces of information surprised even technology-savvy Northfield eighth-graders. Billy Roecklein called it weird. Creepy was the word of choice for Michelle Busch said. Katelyn Gable-Wenner agreed. They were among 300 classmates and some 900 students on Thursday who attended a presentation about cyber safety at Northfield Middle School. Presented by Dave Eisenmann from Minnetonka Public Schools, students got tips about safe computing as well as cyber-bullying and Internet pornography in the hour-long session. Eisenmann drew gasps and laughter from the audience when he displayed the …

Think of Northfield Patch as a community hub—learn, discuss and contribute.
Northfield Patch is six weeks strong, so I hope those of you who have frequented the site have gotten a good feel for what it is. Stay tuned, because things will evolve as we move forward as Patch writers and I settle into a rhythym. In the end, though, Northfield Patch is about the community we all have the great fortune to live in. Those stories will be found by Patch writers, but they will also come from those who participate on the site or strike up a conversation with me when I'm downtown. We will cover the necessary—city council, schools and crime—but we will not ignore the stories that make each of our lives click—someone with an interesting talent, an effort by a group of students or something as simple as a chess tournament. We …

Using a gun to destroy property is an extreme form of intimidation. Intimidation as a parenting technique has the potential to create serious problems. I am very concerned about this father and his relationship with his daughter. I am also very concerned for all the parents and professionals who see this as an example of effective parenting. I saw much applause on Facebook for this video. This is…   more ›
