Also on tap at Tuesday's City Council work session are budget discussions and review of council goals for the proposed Public Safety Center.
The Northfield City Council will get its first chance to discuss the city’s proposed drug paraphernalia ordinance and updates to the tobacco ordinance during Tuesday’s work session. In August, councilors directed city staff to draft the paraphernalia ordinance so the city could restrict the sale of those items. That came after the council amended a tobacco license to prohibit the sale of glass pipes and other items usable as drug paraphernalia at Division Tobacco, a tobacco-only retailer on Division Street. Its owner, Haider Alnomani, was forced to closed his convenience store in Minneapolis in 2006 for failing to prevent drug activity on his property. According to council documents, city staff studied drug paraphernalia laws on the books …

The restaurant, at 306 Division St., will close its Northfield location when its lease expires on Dec. 31.
Another Northfield business is heading out of town. Tea Creations in downtown will close when its lease expires at the end of this year, owner Daniel Xiong said Wednesday. He expects to reopen his restaurant somewhere in the Twin Cities shortly thereafter. “There are several locations we are looking at right now,” he said. “There has been no decision made.” When asked why he plans to move his business, Xiong didn't mince words. “I can’t say business in Northfield is good or bad,” he said. “What I know is we need to go somewhere with more volume, with more population. But this is a great place. We really hate to see a place like this go.” While Northfield may not have the population numbers Xiong says is needed to support Tea Creations, he …

Council directed Public Safety Director Mark Taylor and City Attorney Chris Hood to start work on a policy that would ban all businesses from selling glass pipes, which are commonly used to smoke illegal drugs.
Northfield City Councilors on Tuesday directed City Attorney Chris Hood to draft a policy requiring future "adult" businesses like strip clubs to license with Northfield, which allows the city to limit a club's location, hours and whether it can sell alcohol. The city has no licensing requirements for businesses, which led Councilor Rhonda Pownell to bring the issue before council as a proactive measure—cities cannot legislate retroactive bans on businesses once one applies to operate in a city. A less blunt policy After banning his ability to sell glass pipes and other items usable as drug paraphernalia, councilors revoked their prohibition for Haider Alnomani's new Division Street tobacco shop to sell single cigars and rolling papers. …

The Northfield City Council this week moved ahead on several plans.
Within 30 days, activists fighting to preserve Northfield's historic train depot will get their wish in paper. City Councilors voted 6-1 at Tuesday’s meeting—Councilor Kris Vohs dissented—to issue a draft transfer of the depot's title to the Save the Northfield Depot group, which lobbied to move the structure to a city-owned property near the Quarterback Club west of downtown. The resolution makes the city responsible for inspections and legal and consulting advice up to $11,000. Post office update In an effort to bolster another preservation group's efforts, councilors voted unanimously to support goals presented by the Save Our Post Office task force, which is trying to prevent the U.S. Postal Service from shutting down the city's …

Haider Alnomani hopes to open the store by the end of July, if not sooner.
If all goes according to plan, a new tobacco shop could open on Division Street by the end of July, if not sooner. Haider Alnomani, an Apple Valley resident, has signed a lease with Mainstreet Properties to use the former Hodge-Podge que’ space at the corner of Fifth and Division streets. Nevaeh Salon earlier this year moved to Suite B of the 429 Division St. store. Alnomani says the shop, called Division Tobacco, will have a walk-in humidor and offer, among other items, cigars, rolled tobacco, pipe tobacco and lighters. He said he filed an application for a license with the city two weeks ago and hopes to receive approval by the City Council in the next week or two. Once approval comes through, Alnomani said, he’s going to change the …

Trying to ban anything like that is a waste of time and tax dollars. They can still buy it off the internet. Heck, then you need to ban pop sold in aluminum cans, as they use them like a pipe. There are laws in place already at a state level. Now if Judges would quit giving people a break when they are caught and give them the max sentence along with treatment, maybe that would help. Business in …   more ›
