Dakota County emergency responders and the Miesville Fire Department battled a house fire in Miesville last Friday. The home sustained signifcant damage, but no one was home at the time of the fire, according to the Dakota County Sheriff's Office. On another note, the Dakota County Sheriff's Office honored several jail correctional employees for their exceptional performance at a ceremony last Saturday. Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows wants to remind citizens that the week of April 15th to April 19th is Severe Weather Awareness Week. This event is sponsored by the National Weather Service (NWS) and is intended to raise everyone’s awareness as we enter into the severe weather season. As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, two tornado drills will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2013. Schools and businesses are encouraged to practice emergency plans during the statewide tornado drill at 1:45 p.m. on Thursday. A second drill at 6:55 p.m. will take place in most counties, including Dakota County, to allow families and second-shift workers to practice …

So far this year, Dakota County staff have processed 1,537 new permit to carry applications, plus nearly 300 renewals and address changes, according to Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows. In 2012, which broke the previous annual record by 65 percent, the county processed 2,814 permit forms over the course of the year. County staff are currently working overtime and weekends just to keep up with the permit demand, Bellows said in the weekly Sheriff's newsletter. A waiting game between Dakota County Sheriff's Office Deputy Pat Enderlein and the driver of a suspicious vehicle ended with a meth bust, according to the most recent edition of the Dakota County Sheriff's Newsletter. Enderlein, parked near a gas station, noticed one of the customers at the station was stalling for time, and refusing to leave the station until the deputy departed. Enderlein called in assistance, then, to dupe the suspicious man, drove out of the area. Sure enough, the driver left soon after, and was stopped for having expired tabs on his car. Police searched …

We’re Ready for Spring With another Monday came another snow storm. Several inches of snow, coupled with high winds, resulted in crashes across southern Dakota County. One of the more extensive crashes occurred on Dodd Road south of County Road 70, when a total of nine vehicles collided together in a form of “snow bumper cars.” Low speeds at the time of the chain of crashes resulted in very minor injuries to a few drivers. Winter Weather and Roadways Over the past week, deputies responded to a number of accidents resulting from our recent winter storms: On Thursday, a 61-year-old woman from Farmington sustained serious injuries when sh elost control of her SUV while traveling northbound on Highway 52 near 200th Street. The SUV struck a guardrail, causing the vehicle to roll several times. The driver, who was the lone occupant, sustained head injuries and was taken by air ambulance to Regions Hospital in St Paul. Patrol Notes Sergeant Scott Durdall observed a man grabbing a small box from behind an electrical boxand running across General Sieben Drive and into awaiting car. Finding this activity to be just slightly suspicious, Sergeant Durdall stopped the car and soon learned the package was an electric razor the man admitted to taking from Walmart without permission. A Good Day for a Plunge Last Saturday proved to be a good day for the South Metro Polar Plunge. As in past years, the event was well-attended, with over 1,000 plungers raising a record $250,000 for the Special Olympics. As usual the DCSO was well represented with a large contingent of staff willing to jump. As in past years, Deputy Jen Lenarz was the “ring leader,” organizing much of the event. Deputies responded to a car that went off the road in the area of Blackbird and Ravenna Trail. The driver was the lone occupant of the vehicle, which was very fortunate. The car slid into a fence, resulting in a support post coming through the windshield on the passenger’s sideof the car. As the photo shows, had there been a passenger in the car they would have been seriously injured and possibly killed. From this issue: Deputy Tim Fletcher was investigating the theft of two cameras from a local school. He located one ofthe cameras during a search warrant and also obtained a confession from the former employee. The second camera was also recovered during the investigation.

I'm wondering about the choice of photo for this article, and why it's so dark and out of focus (shallow depth of field - yes I know, but it's that way on purpose.) Is it intended to evoke particular emotions? Are you trying to make pistols look scary? For a story on people legally carrying pistols in MN, why not run a photo of someone legally carrying a pistol, or a holstered pistol, or at least… more ›
