Northfield's school superintendent says district officials believe it’s too late in the 2012-13 school year to reschedule class time missed because of recent snowstorms.
Students in the Northfield Public Schools will not make up the two days they missed in the past two weeks because of snow-related school closings. In a message emailed to district parents on Friday morning, Superintendent Chris Richardson says district officials believe it’s too late in the school year to schedule make-up days. The last day of classes for the 2012-13 school year is June 4. Classes were cancelled on April 23 and May 2 because of late-season snowstorms. The district cancelled classes one other time during the winter. Here is the text of the Richardson’s message: Dear families, Yesterday's closure due to the heavy snow and hazardous driving conditions was a first in my 33 years as a Superintendent. Never before have I had to …

The first meeting is scheduled for 7-9 p.m. March 7 in the upper cafeteria at the Northfield High School. Two more meetings will follow on April 2 and 30. The school board on Monday approved a calendar for the 2013-14 school year that has classes beginning on Sept. 3. Follow Northfield Patch on Twitter…

In this week's video, Superintendent Chris Richardson addresses the push from both Gov. Mark Dayton and the Legislature to move school districts to have all-day, everyday kindergarten for students.
In this week's video, Superintendent Chris Richardson addresses the push from both Gov. Mark Dayton and the Legislature to move school districts to have all-day, everyday kindergarten for students. The Minnesota Senate introduced a bill early in the session with an eye on the initiative; it's been sitting in the Finance Committee since. Because kindergarten education isn't fully funded by the state right now, many districts offer half-time options with the opportunity for full-time kindergarten through a tuition program, which Northfield does. Check out what Richardson has to say about the kindergarten discussion. Follow Northfield Patch on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Sign up for our free newsletter

In this video, Superintendent Chris Richardson talks about short- and long-term security changes administration and the Northfield School Board are considering
In this video, Superintendent Chris Richardson talks about short- and long-term security changes administration and the Northfield School Board are considering. Given the heightened awareness around school security following the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut, Richardson said the district started looking at what could be done differently in Northfield. Also following the shooting, there were security concerns at both the middle and high school. In the short term, Richardson said all buildings except for Sibley Elementary, where visitors to the school have to be buzzed into the building, will likely get hired help to be greeters at the doors. In those buildings, including Northfield High School, Northfield Middle …

In this video, Superintendent Chris Richardson talks about the upcoming public meetings to discuss leasing and distributing tablet computers to the district's students. The proposal includes a 1:1 tablet computer initiative for students in sixth through 12th grade and a pod-based approach at elementary schools using a ratio of one device for every three and a half students. Faculty and staff have been using tablets—iPads—this school year. The school board last year approved a plan to integrate tablets into the district. UPDATED: 10:30 p.m. Monday The Northfield School Board has voted to nix the proposed calendar at this time. Read more about the decision. ____________ Rob Hardy hasn't yet been sworn in as a new member of the Northfield School Board, but he's already facing several big topics when he takes the oath of office on Monday.
