The National Weather Service is calling for a return to below-normal temperatures on Wednesday. Some residents were able to enjoy a rare beautiful spring day in Northfield on Monday.
Monday’s weather seemed a lot like early June. Wednesday’s weather probably will seem a lot like March. The National Weather Service says the balmy weather Northfield has experienced since last Friday quickly will become a memory, as wet and unusually chilly days are on the way for the first few days of May. The weather service’s forecast issued Monday night was calling for a decent day on Tuesday, with a high of 74. That's expected to be followed by falling temperatures, rain and—you guessed it—snow by Wednesday night. Between one and three inches of the frozen stuff could fall late Wednesday night. On its forecast map, the weather service says this week's weather has the "potential for [a] rare May snow accumulation." Rain and snow are …

Although most of us know Northfield as a friendly, welcoming, close-knit community, some people on the outside—particularly some contributors of a certain satirical website—view it with a bit more snark. Patch searched the satirical website UrbanDictionary.com to see what others were posting about Northfield. Urban Dictionary is an online dictionary of slang words and phrases written by the site’s visitors. Its visitors may submit definitions without registering, but they must provide a valid e-mail address to facilitate the submission process. Although they may seem offensive, satire is used in almost all of the definitions on the site. Nonetheless, some of the posts are actually offensive. (OK, probably the majority of the posts.) Here …

The Quadrantid meteors come from the same passing asteroid as December's Geminids.
If you blink, you might miss the Quadrantids Meteor Shower. It peaks in the hours right before dawn Jan. 3, with a maximum number of meteors per hour of about 80. The Quadrantids come from an asteroid called 2003 EH1, just as the Geminids did in early December. Meteor showers usually are named based on the constellations where they originate. Quadrans Muralis (mural quadrant) between Bootes and Draco. The meteor shower is expected to "last only a few hours," according to NASA.com. That means you should look for it in the the night of Jan. 2-3, not the night of Jan. 3-4. The moon will set after midnight, so the best time to view the meteors will be between then and sunrise at about 7:50 a.m. If there is cloud cover in Northfield, you can …
