News of the Caribou closings has been leaking out since a company conference call Friday morning. The Brooklyn Center-based company issued a statement Monday.
Updated below. Northfield’s Caribou Coffee shop, located at 400 5th St. w., is not among the more than 150 slated for closure across the nation. A source with knowledge of the company’s downsizing plans and speaking on the condition of anonymity said 80 stores are being outright closed and 80 others are being converted into Peet’s Coffee locations. Two Minnesota locations in Minneapolis—the Rand Tower store and a shop on the corner of 53rd Avenue and Lyndale Avenue South—are on the chopping block, according to the source, and are scheduled to close next week. “The rest of the Twin Cities stores are safe for now,” the source said, adding that most of the 160 affected stores are in Ohio, Atlanta and Michigan. The Business of the Year, Business Person of the Year and Ambassador of the Year were named.
The Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce this week announced winners of its annual business awards. NAPA Auto Parts was named Business of the Year; Charles Sewich of Heartman Insurance was named Business Person of the Year; Jean Taylor of Taylor Truck Line was named Ambassador of the Year. "These pillars of the business community lead by example, contribute time and energy, and help create a healthy economic climate," said Mary Schmelzer, executive director of the Chamber. More information on the recognition will come at a later time; the annual banquet has been moved to the fall.
