VIDEO: Northfield Historical Society's Winter Scream

It may not be that cold, but folks are ready to kiss winter goodbye.

The wrath of winter may not be what it was a year ago, but folks still descended on Bridge Square on Saturday to participate in Northfield Historical Society'ssecond annual Winter Scream. The fundraiser offered ice cream, donated by Hogan Brothers Acoustic Café, and chili, donated by J. Grundy's Rueb 'N' Stein, for a $5 donation. Highlighting the event was the communal singing of Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It," but with a wintry twist of seasonally appropriate lyrics. In an attempt to bid winter farewell, these lyrics were sung: We’ve got no friends in Phoenix We’ve blown through all our Kleenex We’re not going to take it, any more. We’ve braved the snow and ice We’ve shivered more than twice We’re not going to take it, anymore…

Northfield's Downtown Post Office Gets a Reprieve

The U.S. Postal Service says the Bridge Square postal facility is in "status quo" status, meaning there will be no closure or no building sale for an undetermined time frame.

Call it a reprieve. The Northfield City Council learned Tuesday that the U.S. Postal Service is not currently moving forward with selling the post office in Bridge Square, meaning the facility will remain open for business indefinitely. “The status of the facility is status quo,” said Councilor Suzie Nakasian, who is a member of the city’s Save Our Post Office task force. That news came in a letter from postal officials to people working for Congressman John Kline (R-MN). How long the post office will remain “status quo” is unknown, however. Since August, city officials had been operating under the premise that the Postal Service would close the downtown post office, sell the historical building and move postal operations to the USPS …

Ames Mill Flood Proofing Expected to Wrap Up Today

Traffic patterns in downtown Northfield should return to normal for Tuesday business hours.

Traffic patterns in downtown Northfield are expected to return to normal Tuesday morning with completion of a flood proofing project at Malt-O-Meal’s Ames Mill. The Fourth Street Bridge, which links Bridge Square to businesses on the west bank of the Cannon River, was closed during business hours last week so work by Met Con Construction of Faribault could progress. The bridge closure was extended to today, as the project, which involves bricking in a number of Ames Mill windows, has taken longer than expected to complete. During work hours, a crane truck parked on the bridge has lowered a steel basket to the  stone foundation wall of Ames Mill. From that basket, workers have filled in windows with stone and brick. Crews are confident that…

Motorists Beware: Downtown Northfield Detour Next Week

The Fourth Street Bridge, which carries traffic over the Cannon River at Bridge Square, will be shut down to traffic during traditional business hours Oct. 10 to 14.

Motorists beware: There will be a detour in your future if you drive in downtown Northfield next week. The Fourth Street Bridge, which crosses the Cannon River at Bridge Square, will be closed during traditional business hours next week. In a press release Thursday, Northfield’s engineering division announced the bridge will be closed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily from Monday, Oct. 10, to Friday, Oct. 14. Alternate routes include bridges at Second Street and Fifth Street. The closure is due to work at Malt-O-Meal’s Ames Mill that will require equipment to sit on the bridge. Faribault-based Met-Con will be performing flood proofing on the mill. The construction scheduled for next week had been planned for March, according to the press …

A Year Later, Northfield's '100-year Flood' Has a Lasting Effect on Me

Share your flood photos, videos and stories with the Northfield Patch audience. You can either comment below, add photos/videos to this column or email them to corey.butler@patch.com

I never thought I'd be so happy to be a temporarily out-of-work journalist. I was in between jobs—moving from the Northfield News to Northfield Patch—and didn't have much to do until I started with the new online venture. With a few days to kill before starting as editor of Northfield Patch on Sept. 27, 2010, I figured I'd head out of town for some much needed rest and relaxation. And then it rained. And rained. By time Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, rolled around, the Cannon River had rapidly risen and Northfield was threatened by water. Normally, as a journalist, I would have been in the water covering the difficult time facing the community. Instead, without an outlet for my stories, photos and videos, I stepped away from what had been an …

Defeat of Jesse James Days 2011

DJJD: What's Your Favorite Food?

Take a picture of yourself with your favorite food and add it to the gallery or email it to corey.butler@patch.com

Counting calories will not be part of this weekend's agenda. One of the draws to Northfield's annual Defeat of Jesse James Days is the variety of vendor food available on Bridge Square and elsewhere in town. You can choose from seafood, Mexican, Greek and the more traditional fair-type food like cheese curds and corn dogs. The options, though limited, seem limitless. What's your favorite? Take a photo of yourself or your children (preferably smiling or eating) with your favorite food. You can either upload it to this page by clicking "Add your photos & videos" or email it to Northfield Patch Editor Corey Butler Jr. at corey.butler@patch.com. Please include your name and the food of choice. What are you waiting for? Get eating.

Northfield Crews Work on Bridge Square

T.J. Heinricy, Northfield's streets and parks supervisor, said he has a crew working on the power source beneath Bridge Square.

Bridge Square is a little busier than usual Wednesday morning. T.J. Heinricy, Northfield's streets and parks supervisor, said he has a crew working on the power source beneath Bridge Square. The city is replacing service lines from Northfield Liquors to Bridge Square. Heinricy said the work was necessary after last fall's historical flood.
