Black Friday Countdown in the Northfield Area

There’s a game plan, an emergency plan, and lots of coffee. It’s Black Friday!

It’s the Super Bowl of shopping, the Oscars for retailers. It’s a time when below-the-radar soccer moms and soft-spoken grandpas take to the shopping cart raceways, weaving in and out of the throngs in search of the Holy Grail, that larger-than-life bargain. There’s a game plan, an emergency plan, and lots of coffee. It’s Black Friday! Black Friday hype increases every year, and this year, retailers are upping their game by opening earlier than ever. While Black Friday has traditionally begun the day after Thanksgiving, Wal-Mart was the first to announce they would be opening at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving to accommodate those shoppers looking for both great deals and a social experience. Now Target and Kmart have followed suit, opening Black …

Patch Poll: Cyber Monday Deals Are Out There—Will You Shop?

A Shop.org survey says nearly 80 percent of retailers will have online specials.

Retailers are hoping that those of you who skipped the Thanksgiving weekend crowds at the mall (or maybe didn’t find what you wanted there) will get online and get out your credit cards for so-called Cyber Monday. The website CyberMonday.com, created by Shop.org, claims to have the best online deals from more than 700 online retailers. (Shop.org is a division of the National Retail Federation). While many deals last longer than just one day, on Monday the website will offer hourly specials. If you want sneak peeks at those, you can sign up for email alerts. They’re also to be announced Sunday. Or, you could simply sit at your desk all day Monday and troll the site. (Note to our bosses: Don’t worry—it’s just a suggestion.) According to Shop…

Northfield Shop Owners Excited for Small Business Saturday

Northfield business owners urge residents to shop local this holiday season.

In recent years, Black Friday has become synonymous with long lines, massive discounts and the big box stores that offer them. But now, main street America is staking its claim in the retail madness of Black Friday weekend. Nov. 26 is the second annual Small Business Saturday, which was launched last year by American Express to support local businesses during the holiday season. “I think small businesses are the backbone of our society,” said Lucy Sweitzer, the owner of Anna’s Closet. “In Northfield, we are a small business community.” Local businesses enrich their communities simply by existing. During the past two decades, small businesses have created 65 percent of net new jobs and for every $100 spent in locally owned, independent …

You Better Watch Out: Tips for Black Friday, Cyber Monday Shoppers

Don’t let the hype of ‘official’ shopping days send common sense out the window.

Minnesota consumer advocates and state officials have two words for shoppers who can’t wait for Black Friday and Cyber Monday: Be careful. “For people trying to find holiday deals, Black Friday and Cyber Monday hold a lot of allure,” says Dana Badgerow, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Minnesota and North Dakota. “What we’re aiming to do is remind people to think ahead, make a budget, be aware of store policies—particularly return policies—and not get so focused on potential bargains [that] they fall victim to scams or fraudulent websites.” Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is traditionally known as the official kickoff of the holiday shopping season. The term Cyber Monday was coined in 2005 after online …

Northfield Target Worker to Deliver Signatures Urging Retailer to Delay Black Friday Opening

More than 190,000 people from across America have joined an explosive campaign on Change.org in the past week calling on popular retailer Target to reverse its decision to open late Thanksgiving night

Northfield Target employee Seth Coleman will join consumers and faith leaders to deliver nearly 200,000 signatures to company’s corporate headquarters noon Monday demanding that Target push back its holiday opening currently slated for midnight Thursday. More than 190,000 people from across America have joined an explosive campaign on Change.org in the past week calling on popular retailer Target to reverse its decision to open late Thanksgiving night for pre-Black Friday shopping and instead allow workers to spend the holiday with family. The explosive campaign on Change.org was launched by Anthony Hardwick, a Target employee in Omaha, NE, after he learned the company’s management had moved the standard “Black Friday” opening time up from…

You will NOT see me in any of the big box stores on Black Friday! There are really never any really good deals, but just a few they advertise to get people in the doors anyhow. I will wait until later and check out the other local stores and spend my money there before the big guys anyhow. Can usually find better quality products with the little guys.....   more ›

Northfield Week in Review

Northfield Patch recaps the happenings of the past week.

With a shortened work and school week for many, the past seven days were busy ones for Northfielders. On Monday, the Northfield School Board addressed its financial future, reviewed its fiscal year and updated its anti-bullying policy to now include provisions regarding cyber-bullying, the act of bullying by means of technological devices. Though the weather has been quite chilly, water that has turned to ice already is far from safe. Sheriff Richard Cook said it's still too early to venture out on Rice County waters because formed ice is far from thick enough to handle the weight of people. The Northfield Police Department on Wednesday reported that a man allegedly tried to abduct two Greenvale Park Elementary students after school …
