Classic cars and ArtOrg’s steamroller were among the features of the fifth annual festival Saturday afternoon. Activities continue thorugh Saturday night.
Parked cars and a steamroller typically wouldn’t attract a crowd to Railway Street in Dundas. But when those cars are restored classics and the steamroller is part of ArtOrg’s printmaking process, that’s a different story. The vehicles and print tent were two of the featured events at the fifth annual Celebrate Dundas festival mid-day Saturday in downtown Dundas. Other activities scheduled during the early-afternoon hours included face-painting, music, animal displays, food vendors and horse-drawn wagon rides. The two-day festival kicked off Friday with a baseball clinic and Dundas Dukes baseball game. Events will continue with a street dance Saturday night. Services for the renown sculptor and retired Carleton arts professor are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at Skinner Memorial Chapel, on the Carleton campus.
Renown sculptor Ray “Jake” Jacobson of Northfield has died. Jacobson was creator of two of Northfield’s most prominent works of art, the Bridge Square Fountain and the bronze sculpture “Harvest” in the city’s riverfront Sesquicentennial Legacy Plaza. He was 91. News of Jacobson's passing was confirmed by David Machacek of ArtOrg and Paul Krause of Paul Krause Creative and Dancing Sun Multimedia Wednesday afternoon. Both had worked with Jacobson on a variety of projects. Jacobson passed away peacefully at about 6 a.m. Wednesday, said Krause, who talked with Jacobson's widow, Jeanne, this morning. "It could be said Jake had a very gentle departure," he said. "Jeanne said she is getting a lot of support from friends and neighbors, and their …

NAG Executive Director Ann Mosey says the organization is set to ride out the government shutdown.
Amid the scramble of what’s what during the Minnesota government shutdown, Ann Mosey can pause and take solace in saying three simple words. “We’re very lucky,” the executive director of the Northfield Arts Guild said on Tuesday. The Minnesota State Arts Board closed down Friday with the majority of other state departments when the Republican-led Legislature and Gov. Mark Dayton, a Democrat, failed to bridge a $1.7 billion gap for the 2011-12 budget. Last week, a judge ruled that the arts were not an essential service in Minnesota, shuttering the department during the shutdown. The Arts Guild is in the middle of a two-year funding cycle with the State Arts Board, which provides money for general operating costs. Because the NAG’s funding …

The third annual Celebrate Dundas festival is this weekend and will feature a variety of new events and old favorites.
Dundas has plenty to be proud of, says the president of the town’s historical society. So, calling its annual festival “Celebrate Dundas” makes a lot of sense. “The name fits what we are trying to do,” said Michelle Millenacker, the Dundas Historical Society’s leader. “Dundas has evolved in many ways. And, we want people to take notice of that.” Millenacker and other members of the historical society are organizing the third annual festival, set for Friday and Saturday at various sites in town. Businesses and nonprofits are also lending support. The kickoff event is a youth baseball clinic before the Dundas Dukes’ game at Memorial Park Field Friday night. The remaining events are on Saturday, mainly along Railway Street. Just like Dundas, …

ArtOrg’s new project offers some surprises, such as foam that looks like metal and a former Minnesota Viking.
What tarnishes like metal but is light as a feather? ArtOrg's "Five Sculpture Project." ArtOrg's latest collaborative project officially commenced on a recent morning when the participating artists and arts supporters gathered at the gallery at Switzer's Nursery and Landscaping. ArtOrg's executive director Dave Machacek explained the process of the nonprofit's new project. Once the polystyrene foam is carved, technicians will coat the foam sculpture with fire-resistant materials including a sealant and a two-part epoxy. Next is a metal-rich paint that will, when exposed to patina chemicals and surface paint, react and develop the weathered, subtly-colored look of metal sculpture. Machacek expects such a sculpture to last at least 10 years …

The mammoth piece of art, appropriately called "The Big Print," uses nearly 1,200 donated panels and is on display at St. Olaf.
There's art. There's big art. Then there's what the folks at ArtOrg have accomplished. More than two years in the making, The Big Print, which is on display at St. Olaf College's Buntrock Commons, is comprised of 1,180 replicated 16-inch by 16-inch relief prints collected from children and adults during ArtOrg's first Thousand Print Summer in 2008. The piece is so big that ArtOrg has submitted an application with Guinness World Records to garner that recognition, said Dave Machacek, executive director of ArtOrg. The Big Print covers nearly 5,000 square feet of walls — yes, walls, as it spans three levels — in the main corridor of Buntrock Commons. Each individual print from 2008 was reprinted on fabric and sewn together, strategically …

ArtOrg's latest exhibit closes Saturday.
Editor's note: ArtOrg Executive Director Dave Machacek writes about friend and artist, Zigmunds Priede, whose work is currently on display at the ArtOrg gallery through Saturday. Zigmunds Priede came from his native Latvia to the small town of Judson, MN, after fleeing a war-torn Europe with his mother and sister. He became a student at the University of Minnesota and took a printmaking class. After he entered the printmaking studio, Priede said that he "never left." After graduating, he and some friends drove to California in a blue 1954 Ford. Priede completed a graduate degree in art from Berkeley then headed for a job as a master printer near New York City at Universal Limited Art Editions on Long Island. He started as a master printer…
