Authorities say Jesse Allen Helgeson offered a used golf cart and an all-terrain vehicle to an undercover officer in exchange for murdering his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend.
A Kenyon man already charged with beating his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend in January with a flashlight has now been charged with trying to arrange for an acquaintance to kill the man in exchange for a used golf cart and his father’s all-terrain vehicle. Jesse Allen Helgeson, 26, is charged in Rice County with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, a felony with a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Helgeson, who was arrested Monday in rural Northfield, remained in the Rice County Jail on Wednesday. Rice County Judge John T. Cajacob set Helgeson’s bail at $500,000 unsecured or $250,000 with conditions, including that he have no contact with his ex-girlfriend—the mother of his 2-year-old son—or the victim. The Southeast Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths coalition, which includes law enforcement from 11 counties, including Rice, will have extra seat belt enforcement patrol from May 21 to June 3.
A seat belt saved Dani Fiebelkorn's life. The teen was driving on Interstate 35 last October when she fell asleep at the wheel, flipping the car through a ditch and coming to a rest upside down. "I was very lucky that I didn't get any broken bones," she said on Monday at a press conference at Northfield Hospital encouraging seat belt use. "I just really hope everyone does wear their seat belts so they don't have to go through the same thing that I did." Fiebelkorn was presented with the "Saved by the Belt" award for wearing her belt during the wreck. One person was airlifted Monday afternoon after the motorcycle trike he was driving on Highway 3 collided with a Chevy Tahoe.
One person was airlifted Monday afternoon after the motorcycle trike he was driving on Highway 3 collided with a Chevy Tahoe. Martin J. Burger, 61, of Northfield, was airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul and is in critical condition following the wreck, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. Northfield Sgt. Scott Johnson said the Tahoe was driving northbound on Highway 3 near 320th Street just north of the Northfield city line when it swerved left to avoid a turning vehicle. The Tahoe, driven by Faribault’s James Rutherford, then collided with the trike, which was driving in the southbound lane, according to the State Patrol. Ruthford wasn’t injured in the wreck. A 1956 model Chevrolet was damaged in the 3 p.m. fire. Traffic on Division Street was rerouted for less than 30 minutes.
Division Street between Third and Fourth streets was closed for a short time after 3 p.m. Sunday for a car fire. Northfield firefighters and police responded when a 1956 model Chevrolet parked in front of Bursch Travel caught fire shortly after 3 p.m. The fire appeared to start in the engine compartment and damaged at least the engine, hood, front windshield, dash and windows. It was extinguished in short order by firefighters using hoses. A 44-year-old Faribault woman stopped by Northfield Police for reportedly driving erratically Thursday afternoon has been charged with felony possession of methamphetamine. Jodi Lynette Lacy was being held in the Rice County Jail Friday afternoon, charged with one count of fifth-degree drug possession. If convicted, she could be punished with up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
