Dog Killing Victim: 'I Just Can't Understand How Anyone Could Be So Cruel'

Northfield resident Amanda Murphy lost her family dogs, Stella and Hugh, in a burglary on May 8.

Before she left home on the morning of May 8, Amanda Murphy said goodbye to her two Miniature Schnauzers, Stella and Hugh, opened a window for fresh air, then turned on a radio to keep the dogs company during the day. It was the last time Murphy, a Northfield resident, saw her two pets alive. Later that day, police say, 30-year-old Matthew David Jensen broke into Murphy's home, killed Stella and Hugh and stole $120 worth of state quarters. Police determined that one dog was stabbed and the other died from stangulation and blunt force trauma, according to a Northfield News report. The Murphy home wasn't the only residence allegedly burglarized by Jensen. He is accused of breaking into another home nearby, killing a third dog there and …

UPDATE: Downed Electric Line Stops Highway 3 Traffic

Both directions of Highway 3 are closed near the Rice-Dakota county line. The closure could last well into the evening.

UPDATE 6:45 P.M.: Xcel Energy says two customers remain without power, as of 6:40. _____________________________ UPDATE 6 P.M.: Xcel Energy says 66 customers remain without electric this evening, down from about 1,200 customers two hours ago. The latest information from the Minnesota Department of Transportation says Highway 3 will remain closed until about 8 p.m. _____________________________ UPDATE 5:05 P.M.: A boat apparently is to blame for Wednesday afternoon's road closure on Highway 3 near the Rice-Dakota county line. UPDATE: Man Formally Charged for Involvement In Dakota County Standoff

Tyrone Joseph Mohr, 34, was arrested shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday by the Dakota Countty Sheriff’s Department after a seven-hour standoff at a home north of Northfield.

UPDATE, TUESDAY 10:30 P.M.: The 34-year-old man arrested following a seven-hour standoff with police north of Northfield last weekend was formally charged on Tuesday. Tyrone Joseph Mohr made his first appearance in Dakota County District Court on Tuesday morning. He has been charged with one count of felony terroristic threats, which is punishable by up to five years in jail and/or a fine of up to $10,000. On Tuesday night, he remained in the Dakota County Jail on $100,000 bond with no restrictions, or $75,000 with restrictions. The charge stemming from Saturday's incident isn't the only reason Mohr remains in custody, however. He is being held on $35,000 bond for a felony charge of terroristic threats in Hennepin County. Jensen Charged with Break-Ins, Dog Killings

Matthew David Jensen, 30, was charged on Monday with one count of felony first-degree burglary, two counts of felony second-degree burglary and three counts of felony mistreatment of animals.

A 30-year-old Northfield man arrested following a series of break-ins and dog killings in Northfield now faces formal criminal charges. Matthew David Jensen, 30, was charged on Monday with one count of felony first-degree burglary, two counts of felony second-degree burglary and three counts of felony mistreatment of animals, according to a Northfield News report. According to the newspaper, Jensen is accused of kiling one dog with a knife, and two others by strangulation and blunt force trauma during a series of three residential break-ins that took place on May 8 and 9. National Police Week 2013 is recognized May 12th through May 18th.  There are over 900,000 sworn law enforcement officers in the United States.  Our State, County, and City law enforcement officers serve with valor, distinction, and great success. Violent and property crime rates in Rice County are at historic lows, thanks in large measure to the dedicated service of the men and women of law enforcement.  Many of these officers spend a large part of their time patrolling our roadways.  On average across the nation, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty every 57 hours.  The number one cause of officer fatalities in 2012 was traffic-related incidents.  We owe our State, County, and City peace officers our full support.  …

Northfield Hospital Locked Down for Two Hours on Sunday

A 24-year-old man was arrested for allegedly calling a threat to the Emergency Department.

Northfield Hospital was placed on lockdown early Sunday afternoon after a threat was called to the Emergency Department. The Pioneer Press says the hospital was locked down from about 12:30 p.m. until 2:20, when a 24-year-old man from Biwabik, MN, was arrested at a relative's home in Farmington. Mary Quinn Crow, the hospital's interim president and CEO, told the Pioneer Press that people entering and exiting the hospital during that time were escorted. Northfield's interim police chief, Chuck Walerius, told the Pioneer Press the suspect "apparently was upset over treatment that was denied or administered to him" when he was a patient at the hospital on Friday.
