A fundraiser is scheduled for 2-6 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at The Grand Event Center.
To the editor: Hi, my name is Jennifer Gilomen, I am a close friend of Janice Roberts and her family. I am sending this letter out to you to share a story about the health struggles that Janice’s daughter Abby has been facing which has greatly impacted the whole Roberts family. Abby was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis when she was 10 years old. Since then Abby has had her colon, appendix & gall bladder removed. Abby had the colon rebuilt but it was unsuccessful. Abby is now living with constant debilitating pain that has required her to miss out on school and the life a normal 16-year-old girl is blessed to live. The Mayo hospital and clinic was not able to help Abby, and therefore have referred Abby to the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland…

"Accumulating prescription medications at home can invite people with drug habits to look at your home as a source for drugs."
For the last year Rice County has waged a “Take It to the Box” campaign, encouraging people to bring unused prescription drugs to black boxes found at law enforcement stations in Northfield and Faribault. You simply drop medications into the secure black box to dispose of them - no questions asked and all medications welcome. The effort has accomplished much by educating the public about the dangers of prescription medications and the need to properly dispose of them. A common notion exists that prescribed drugs fall into a different class than street drugs. We presume they are safe to have around the house. While medication prescribed for patients may be necessary and safe for them, it is usually not safe for others, and can be deadly if …

Is there a toy you avoid buying because it’s too creepy or scary?
I swear it was possessed. Furby. That furry little menace always sat idly and quiet on my daughter’s shelf when she was younger. However, the minute I walked into her room or even just walked by, Furby would start talking and doing his creepy thing. It wouldn’t have been a toy I would have ever brought into our home willingly—just the gremlin-like look of it was disturbing enough. It was one of those gifts from a relative that you try to tolerate—for a while. Eventually Furby happened to find its way into the bottom of the box of toys during a move. To this day, I’m still fairly certain I removed Furby’s batteries before it went into the box. The minute we loaded the boxes in the van, we could still hear Furby trying to interact with us …
