DJJD: 'Nicolaus Was My Name'

The slain Swedish immigrant was honored with poetry on Wednesday.

The that began Northfield's annual Wednesday featured speeches honoring all of the Northfield heroes who thwarted  the robbery of the in 1876. Bystander and recent Swedish immigrant Nicolaus Gustafson, who was shot in the head by the fleeing robbers, was remembered in this poem by descendent Del Gustafson.

The story of Nicolaus Gustafson was long ignored. His grave went unmarked; some said he was Norwegian; he was even portrayed as a drunk in early of the bank raid. Del Gustafson offered the poem as his version of "what Nicolaus would say."
