Name:
Allie Harmer

Age: 19

Parents: Margaret & Terry Haugen, and the late Doug Harmer

Employer: Millstream Commons & Old Memorial Pool

Education: Graduated from Northfield High School in 2010 and will be attending Augsburg College this fall.

Educational goals: I am working toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies. I will be studying Human Resources or Public Relations & Advertising.

School activities, honors, clubs, etc.: During my time at Northfield High School, I was a member of the dance team, the Hiliners. In 10th grade, I became a choreographer and held that title through my senior year. I was also elected a captain my senior year. I received one All-Conference award, two All-Conference runner-ups, and was voted MVP senior year. I was a member of the softball team up until 11th grade. Senior year I joined to fall cheerleading team for football and was voted MVP. As a Senior I enrolled in a Leadership class which put students in charge of planning events and creating projects that would benefit our school and students. I graduated with honors for having a GPA of 3.5 or above and for being a member of the National Honor Society. I also have been volunteering with the DJJD Committee since middle school by providing help during the Jr. Royalty Coronation. I have volunteered numerous times with the Feed My Starving Children program, the American Cancer Society and volunteer for Sunday services at my church.

Hobbies and recreation activities: I like spending time with my friends, listening to music, playing Wii, watching movies, going tubing at the lake, shopping, photography, and playing with my young niece.

Career or long-term goals: A Communications degree can lead to many different and successful careers. I would like to take the time to get a feel for the type of Communications degree I would pursue (Human Resources or Public Relations). No matter which one I choose I believe that I will find a career that I can enjoy because I will be working with people.

Why do you want to a part of the DJJD Royalty Scholarship Program? The program offers so many opportunities to travel to other cities for their events so I would be able to meet a lot of new people and form friendships. I want to learn much more about our town’s history and why we celebrate the heroism of our town’s people, and then I could help others learn as well. I would love to work with the wonderful people on the committee and have a year full of remarkable memories.

What do you hope to accomplish if chosen to be a part of the Defeat of Jesse James Days Royalty Scholarship Program? I would hope to represent our community and celebration in an admirable way. I would hope to promote the DJJD and draw others to Northfield for our celebration. I would also hope to become a role model for young people in our community, as many of the past ambassadors have been for me.

What is your favorite event during the Defeat of Jesse James Days Celebration and why? My favorite is the bank raid reenactment. It is very cool to see people from our community telling our historic story live. In the few minutes it takes for the raid to complete, a person from outside of Northfield can learn what our whole celebration is about. There is something about seeing the event in action that is so captivating and much more exciting that just reading about what happened that September day.
