Northfield Gymnast Howell Claims State Title

Raiders junior posts an 9.8 to take Class AA individual championship in uneven parallel bars.

One night after the Northfield gymnastics claimed its , Raiders junior Meaghan Howell earned a state title of her own by posting a 9.8 to win the uneven bars competition at the Class AA individual meet.

"It's just unbelievable, everything just flowed together," she said. "I worked so hard for this all season and it feels great. I'm just happy."

Howell, who also finished 18th in the all-around, set off a jubilant celebration after a clutch performance on the bars in the fifth round of competition.

"She had ice water in her veins," Northfield co-head coach Paul Bernhard said.

Howell was one of five Raiders to compete in the state individual championships; she and eighth-grader Bailey DuPay took part in the all-around, while eighth-graders Christy Anderson and junior Sveta Mason qualified in floor exercise, as did eighth-grader Alexis Kiefer on balance beam.

DuPay placed 13th in the all-around with a 37.35, recording scores of 9.6 on vault, 9.35 on bars, 8.925 on beam and 9.475 on floor.

En route to her all-around tally of 36.775, Howell posted scores of 9.0 on vault, 8.9 on beam and 9.075 on floor in addition to her championship effort on bars.

Mason placed 11th on floor with a score of 9.45, with Anderson taking 19th at 9.25; Kiefer was 20th on beam, putting up a 9.025.

"I'm just so proud of our team," Howell said. "It was a good weekend."
