Northfield Girls Hockey Loses in Section 1A Championship Game

The Raiders were bested by Red Wing 4-1.

It was a good run.

After running over Waseca 8-0 and Faribault 6-0, the Northfield girls hockey team couldn't defeat No. 1 Red Wing on Friday night to win the Section 1A championship.

With the 4-1 win, Red Wing moves on to the state championship at the Xcel Energy Center, which starts Wednesday. Northfield kept the game close until Red Wing blew the game open late in the third period.

Captain Hannah Pilger scored for the Raiders late in the first period about a minute after Red Wing scored its first goal.

Red Wing's Annie Gorman got a power-play goal with about six minutes left in the third period for the game-winner. The Wingers added a third goal four minutes later and got an empty-net goal 42 seconds later.

The Raiders failed to convert any of their six power plays. Red Wing went one for seven with the advantage.

Northfield netminder Samantha Stark made 16 saves.
