Northfield Head Start Schools Closed Monday Due to Extreme Cold, Schools Host Workday

Northfield schools are closed Monday due to an in-service, with no after school activities. The cold has canceled other activities, such as Head Start

UPDATE (7:20 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 26): The Northfield Public Schools WILL be having their teacher in-service day tomorrow, but Head Start programs will be canceled due to the cold.

Yet another "polar vortex" has forced Northfield Head Start to cancel the session for Monday, Jan. 27.

Northfield Public Schools had an in-service day scheduled for Monday, which will continue as planned.

Staff came down with the decision around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, as 30 mph winds ripped through the area, blowing snow and plugging roads.

While that's caused the problems for Sunday night, Monday morning's situation looks even more dire. Winds at sustained speeds of around 25 mph are expected with temperatures in the teens to 20 below zero, creating wind chill effects of 40 below zero.

Under those conditions, exposed skin can freeze in less than five minutes.
