Northfield Declares Snow Emergency; Schools Closed, Too

Northfield Schools has cancelled classes district-wide on Tuesday, thanks to a snowstorm that blanketed the region with a thick layer of freshly fallen powder overnight.

The winter storm deposited as much as 10 inches of snow during the overnight hours in some Dakota and Rice county communities, according to the National Weather Service. The snow is expected to continue this morning, with totals in excess of 10 inches likely in some areas.

Forecasters are calling for a high temperature of 29 degrees on Tuesday, with northeast winds at 10 mph. The winter storm warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. this evening. The Minnesota Department of Transportation is reporting difficult driving conditions on all of the major Dakota and Rice county highways.

Northfield has also declared a snow emergency. From the city:

A snow Emergency has been declared and will continue until the streets are plowed curb-to-curb after the weather system has passed. During the emergency NO PARKING WILL BE ALLOWED ON CITY STREETS. TRASH/RECYCLING CANS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON CITY STREETS.

Trash/recycling cans should be placed in the driveway behind the curb line.

When the lots are signed there is “No Parking Allowed from 12:00 AM till 6:00AM” All downtown parking lot permit holders must park in the proper unsigned lots during the event.
