Third DFL Candidate Considering Running for District 20B

Montgomery's mayor, Mick McGuire, is considering seeking the DFL nomination.

Ahead of Tuesday's release of Minnesota's new Legislative districts—where Northfield moved from District 25B to District 20B—we knew of two candidates seeking the DFL nomination to represent the area.

There may now be a third.

The New Prague Times reports that Montgomery's mayor, Mick McGuire, is considering seeking the party's nomination to represent District 20B.

"It's definitely something I'm exploring," McGuire told the paper. "I've had a number of calls ... from people who felt my moderate stance on many issues and small business background would be welcome within the DFL caucus."

Montgomery wasn't in the same district as Northfield until the new map was released this week. In 2010, McGuire lost to Glenn Gruenhagen to represent District 25A. Gruenhagen carried 51 percent of the vote, while McGuire received 49 percent of the vote, according to the Minnesota Secretary of State election results.

If McGuire enters the race for the DFL nomination, he'd face off against former , to Republican Kelby Woodard by 37 votes, and , who is in his first term on the .

Both Bly and Ganey live in Northfield.

Because of redistricting, there is not an incumbent for District 20B. Woodard, a Republican from Belle Plaine, is now part of District 20A.
