Sen. Dahle, Other Lawmakers Push for Crucial Investments in Minnesota Nursing Homes, Long-Term Care

Senator Kevin Dahle (DFL-Northfield) is authoring legislation to increase funding for nursing homes and senior home care services in Minnesota. This issue has wide support, including members from both parties and both chambers, as well as various interest groups.  

“The legislation provides for a much-needed 5% raise for those individuals caring for our seniors and establishes a long-term care consultation team,” said Senator Dahle. “We cannot be blind to the long-term care crisis in Minnesota. By doing so we disregard the health and wellbeing of our families and friends. We must take action.”  

Nursing home rates have been frozen for the past four years and the Elderly Waiver program has been cut by double digits over that same time frame.  To help facilitate the changes needed, a bipartisan working group has been formed and will collaborate with the Governor and Legislative leaders to support funding for nursing homes and the Elderly Waiver program.  

“This legislation is a good start. I hope that in combination with the Governor’s budget and upcoming initiatives we can restore our commitment to Minnesota seniors and those who care for them. Sadly, these employees have not seen their salary keep up with inflation, forcing some of these dedicated workers to live at the poverty level and work two or three jobs to make ends meet. They stay on with long-term care groups because of their commitment to their clients and the mission of the facility.”
