Post Office Could Be Put Up for Sale Within Days

The city has received an email from a real estate services group saying the United States Postal Services wants to move ahead with selling the Bridge Square post office.

A “For Sale” sign soon could be staked in front of Northfield’s downtown post office.

The United States Postal Service plans to put the city’s historic post office in up for sale “in the coming days,” according to the Northfield News.

On Tuesday, Northfield City Administrator Tim Madigan received an email from CBRE Group, a commercial real estate services firm, informing the city of the USPS’s plans. A company representative plans to meet with city officials later this week to “to discuss the likely reuse scenarios that fit the city’s vision for the project going forward.”

The closing of the means that consumer mailing services in Northfield would be consolidated into the USPS postal carrier annex at 2101 Cannon Road, near Target in the southern end of the city.

The status of the downtown post office has been uncertain for most of the past year, after the USPS announced in March the location would cost as part of a nationwide cost-cutting plan. Immediately following that announcement, city government and civic leaders formed in an attempt to at least stall the planned closure.

Since August, city officials had been operating under the premise that the Postal Service would close the downtown post office, sell the historical building and move postal operations to the annex.

In October, the Northfield City Council learned that the USPS would not move forward with selling the post office in Bridge Square at that time, meaning the facility would remain open for business indefinitely.

Finally, last month, the postal service said it would not close or consolidate any of its post offices or mail processing facilities until May 15 of this year.
