Northfield's Bly to Run for Minnesota House

The former two-term state representative for House District 25B confirmed Thursday night he is seeking election. The House district in which he will run will be determined later this month, when legislative redistricting maps are released.

Former state representative of Northfield confirmed Thursday night he will run again for the Minnesota House of Representatives.

One question remains, however: In which district?

Bly, a DFLer, served two terms as representative for House District 25B before losing his seat to Republican of Belle Plaine by in 2010.

Whether Bly would face Woodard in a District 25B rematch in November or seek election in another district will be determined when the state’s legislative redistricting map is released later this month.

Bly said Thursday night he will run regardless of which district Northfield finds itself.

“Redistricting will affect what district I run in,” he said. “As of Feb. 21, District 25B will most likely be completely changed. I am running for the Minnesota House seat that Northfield, the district I will be living in, is in.”

Bly was elected to the House in 2006, then re-elected in 2008.

On his Facebook page Thursday, Bly posted the message, “Join my campaign group,” and directed supporters to his “David Bly for House” page, which had been dormant since 2010.

“I was very proud to serve Northfield in the state Legislature and look forward to do so again if I am given that opportunity,” Bly said.

Bly carried Northfield with 68 percent of the vote in 2010.

REDISTRICTING

As it stands now, District 25B is made up of all but one precinct of Northfield, as well as Dundas, Nerstrand, Belle Plaine, Bridgewater, Cedar Lake Erin, Forest, Helena, Lonsdale, Nerstrand, Northfield, Shieldsville, Webster, Wheatland and Wheeling.

Northfield’s most northerly precinct is in House District 36B.

Because of legislative redistricting prompted by the 2010 Census, Northfield could remain in a reconfigured 25B, or be placed elsewhere.

For instance, in a by House Republicans, nearly all of Northfield would be in a new House District 22A, that also would include the east half of Faribault, Kenyon and communities south to the Steele County border.

Northfield's precinct in 36B would move to a new District 54B.

Under that plan, Patti Fritz, the DFL representative for 26B, which includes Faribault, would become the incumbent for the proposed District 22A.
