Ethics Complaint Against Thompson Dismissed

Not only was the complaint dismissed, but the board declined to do an investigation.

An ethics complaint filed last week against State Sen. Dave Thompson (R-District 36), of , has been dismissed without investigation.

The complaint, , insinuated Thompson, by way of receiving $70,000 in payments since 2009 from the Republican Party of Minnesota, and not personally disclosing them, was unethical. the complaint also suggested Thompson was paid to run for his Senate seat.

“I complied with all disclosure requirements. Therefore, I am not surprised by the Board’s decision," Thompson said in a statement. "Still, it is gratifying to see a clear statement from (Goldsmith) concluding that the complaint does not even provide a basis for an investigation.”

In a letter to Martin in response to the complaint, Goldsmith said there wasn't evidence provided of "$70,000 in payments" and the only evidence provided int he complaint by Martin was "a Federal Communications Commission report showing a payment of $3,750 with a described purpose of 'General Party Media Consulting.'"

Goldsmith went on to write that the $3,750 payment was appropriate, and that "disclosure of independent contractor income is not required."
