Depot Deal Could Be Around the Corner

The Northfield City Council on March 6 will consider an agreement to sell land to the Save the Northfield Depot group.

Residents fighting to preserve Northfield's historic train depot by moving it to the middle of town and turning it into a transit hub received good news at Tuesday's City Council meeting: a deal might just be worked out—and soon.

The council is expected to consider an agreement at its March 6 meeting that would sell 0.8 acres of land behind the Quarterback Club—known as the Q block—to the Save the Northfield Depot group for $1, according to the Northfield News.

Should the deal happen, the group must raise $293,000 for the first phase of the restoration and redevelopment plan. Canadian Pacific is the current owner of the depot.

The council in June 2011 determined the move was feasible. In August 2011, more than a dozen volunteers cleaned up and cut down trees and brush around the depot in preparation for a deal.
