DeKruif's Bill for Disabled Motorcycle Plates Signed Into Law

A proposal sponsored by Sen. Al DeKruif (R- Elysian) to ensure Minnesota drivers will be able to get an additional handicapped license plate for motorcycles along with their standard vehicle plates is now law.

Minnesota law allows drivers only one vehicle plate and a placard. DeKruif’s bill gives disabled motorcyclists the right to have a disabled plate where the placard doesn't work well. Many have blown away or have been stolen.

“This was a common-sense idea, and I’m glad to see it become law,” DeKruif said. “In the past, the law had changed to prevent misuse of the plates, but as more and more riders take to bikes with sidecars and trikes, the law needed to adapt. Many of those affected by this law are veterans injured serving this nation. We owe it those veterans to make sure they can continue their sport.”

The measure passed the Senate with unanimous support and the House with wide bipartisan support.
