Candidate Filing for City, County Races Opens Tuesday

Filing opens at 8 a.m. Tuesday for municipal and county races.

If you've been chomping at the bit to raise your hand and run for a local elected office, your time has come.

Filing for the 2012 municipal and county elections opens at 8 a.m. Tuesday and runs through 5 p.m. June 5.

Northfield offices up in this year's election cycle are mayor, the second-ward seat, third-ward seat and an at-large seat, all of which are four-year terms.

Candidates can file an Affidavit of Candidacy with the city clerk at 801 Washington St.

According to the city, "all candidates shall also complete and file the public disclosure statement prescribed by the city's ethics ordinance. Candidates who will be absent from the state during the filing period may arrange to file prior to departure. A primary election shall be held on Tuesday, August 14, 2012, for any municipal office where more than two persons file for nomination.  If no more than two persons file for nomination, their names shall not be placed on the primary ballot and shall be placed on the general election ballot as the nominees for that office."

Under state statute, David Ludescher has already filed as a candidate for the at-large council position, according to city clerk Deb Little. Late last year, Ludescher was one of to apply to replace outgoing Councilor Kris Vohs, but wasn't selected by the council.

County races

All five county commissioner seats are up for election this year. Northfield will be represented by two of those districts in 2013.

The majority of Northfield falls in the new District 2, which contains five of the seven precincts in Rice County. Northfield's Ward 4, Precinct 2 and Ward 2, Precinct 1 will be represented by District 1. 

Commissioner Galen Malecha, the current District 2 commissioner, is running for re-election. Commissioner Jake Gillen, the District 1 representative, is also expected to run for another term.

The county is also looking for one supervisor for Soil & Water Conversation in Districts 1, 2 and 4.

Candidates for county offices can file with the Rice County Auditor-Treasurer at the Rice County Government Services Building, 320 Third Street N.W., Suite 5, Faribault, MN 55021.
