Director of Public Safety Mark Taylor said officers don't believe anyone was injured in the shooting.

Taylor said the incident is believed to have started in Faribault with a possible shooting between two individuals and that it carried into Northfield, where he said it's possible one of the suspects could have connections.

At least seven squad cars surrounded an abandoned four-door sedan near Applebee's on County Road 1 just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday. Taylor said he believes the car was stolen by one of the people involved in the incident and dumped there. That car, as well as a Chevy Blazer believed to be involved in the incident and that was left in the Cub Foods parking lot, were towed away as evidence.

Jake Spitzack, who was waiting outside Target in anticipation for Black Friday, said he heard several shots behind Cub Foods around 10 p.m.

"Me and my cousins heard the shots … we thought it was a car backfiring or something," he said, but said no one saw anything other than officers showing up and searching the area.

Shortly after 11 p.m., a helicopter hovered in the area for 10 to 15 minutes, Spitzack said.

Because the incident started in Faribault, Taylor said investigators from that department will take the lead on the case. The Minnesota State Patrol and Rice County Sheriff's Office are also assisting.

One person has been brought to Faribault for questioning, Taylor said, but that person is not necessarily a suspect.

If you have any information about the incident, you're asked to call the Northfield Police tipline at 663-4747.
