Northfield Police Emphasize Curfew After 'Uptick in Vandalism'

The city's curfew ordinance prevents teens from being outside unattended past 10 p.m. or midnight, depending on age.

The Northfield Police Department is looking to crack down on graffiti and pranks by placing a higher emphasis on the city' curfew laws.

"In an effort to help curb recent reports of vandalism and damage to property, the Northfield Police Department will be STRICTLY enforcing the curfew ordinance," the police department wrote in a statement on its website Thursday.

The ordinance bars children under the age of 16 from being outside unattended after 10 p.m., and older children, age 16 and 17, after midnight.

"We’re starting to see an uptick in vandalism and damage to property cases where there are kids involved," said interim Police Chief Chuck Walerius told the Northfield News. "We need to make sure that we just take a harder look at enforcing the curfew laws and make sure the kids are out there for positive reasons, not negative reasons."

Children caught violating curfew can be charged with a petty misdemeanor and fined $100.
