UPDATED: Fatality in Semi, Car Collision on Interstate 35

A 2000 Mazda Protege was traveling southbound when it came through the crossover and collided with a 2013 International semitrailer, according to the State Patrol.

One person has died in a fatal car wreck in southern Rice County, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

A 2000 Mazda Protege was traveling southbound Tuesday afternoon when it came through the crossover and collided with a 2013 International semitrailer just north of Medford, according to the State Patrol.

Authorities aren't releasing the name of the woman who was driving the car, who is a 24-year-old South St. Paul resident. She is listed in critical condition and has been brought to North Memorial Hospital. She was wearing her seat belt.

The State Patrol is reporting that Jeremy J. Monette, 41, of Big Lake, was a passenger in the Protege and died at the scene. He was wearing his seat belt. (Editor's note: The State Patrol originally reported that Monette was driving the semitrailer).

Irman Ali, 47, of Hoffman Estates, IL, was the driver of the semitrailer, according to MSP. He was not injured in the collision.

The cause of the wreck is unknown at this time.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reopened the left southbound lane on I-35 around 3:45 p.m. after being closed for about two hours.
