Funeral for Former Mayor Arnie Nelson Set for Friday

Services will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church in Northfield.

Former mayor of Northfield Arnold "Arnie" Nelson passed away at the age of 87 Nov. 27 following a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

According to Northfield News, Nelson was born Sept. 11, 1926, in Lund, WI to William J. and Edith (Swenson) Nelson. After high school, Nelson served in the U.S. Navy from Oct. 20, 1944 to June 10, 1946. That fall he enrolled at St. Olaf College, where he graduated from in 1950, the obituary said.

Nelson was incredibly active the the Northfield community, not only serving as mayor, but he was also part of the Northfield City Council and Northfield Planning Commission, as well as a past president of the Northfield Chamber of Commerce, Northfield News reported. He also taught and coached athletics in Northfield, and other towns.

A celebration of Nelson's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6 at Bethel Lutheran Church, 1321 North Ave. in Northfield. A visitation is scheduled from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5 and one hour prior to the Friday service.
