Looking Back – SPUR's First Year

I can't believe it has been a full year since SPUR opened its doors! First, I'd like to thank those who made it down to our birthday party, and all of those who brought chili! I'd also like to thank our sponsors, Northfield Economic Authority and Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation for their assistance in start-up funding for SPUR Coworking and Business Incubator. Lastly, I'd like to thank our wonderful coworkers for helping to build up SPUR as more than just a coworking space, but as a community where we get stuff done, share cupcakes, and hide the prank snake around the office.

This year, I've had the pleasure of getting to know 14 members and we have helped 42 clients with their businesses. One of our Coworking members has been so successful that she hired a part-time employee this year!

I've also had the opportunity to work with wonderful interns, from both the colleges and local high schools. They bring a tremendous amount of energy, talent, and technological expertise to SPUR.

SPUR's great success, along with the NEC's connections to local businesses, has allowed us put into development two new programs. We hope to launch them officially this fall:

  • Business Buckaroos, a youth program run by the NEC, designed to spark and nurture an interest in entrepreneurship by engaging area students in a free, education summer experience.
  • And, The Hired Hands Program, which provides small business owners and non-profits an affordable alternative to hosting an intern or exhausting resources by offering project based interns for a small fee.

If you're interested in finding information on these new programs, or want to see what coworking is all about, feel free to visit our website at: spurnorthfield.com. Once again, thanks for celebrating SPUR's first birthday with us!
