St. Olaf’s FLAC program highlighted in French journal

The most recent issue of the French Reviewfeatures an article that highlights the Foreign Languages Across the Curriculum program at St. Olaf College.

“Not an Extravagance: Reflections on Using French Texts to Teach French History,” written by Associate Professor of French Jolene Barjasteh and Associate Professor of History Dolores Peters, focuses on the creation of the French FLAC program in the St. Olaf History Department, offers advice on the selection of appropriate original-language texts, and shares samples of learning aids.

The article further emphasizes the major contributions to the student’s long-term learning — something the FLAC seeks to maintain.

The program gives students the opportunity to integrate their knowledge of a foreign language with another field of study by pairing a course (in a discipline such as history) with a FLAC course. Students gain deeper understanding of the discipline, improved language skills, and are better prepared to study abroad. Students can also earn an “applied foreign language competency” certification after the completion of two FLAC courses.

The French Review is an official journal of the American Association of Teachers of French and has the largest circulation of any scholarly journal of French and Francophone studies in the world.
