How Boy Scout Training Applies in All Areas of My Life

I am at Boy Scout training all week working with various groups.

Monday, I was up bright and early to hit the road for Houlton, WI.  I am making this trip to fulfill a pledge that I made to myself and a couple of others last September.  What is that pledge you ask?  I will be attending a week long training put on by the Boy Scouts called Wood Badge.  Wood Badge is a leadership course that takes management training around group dynamics and puts it into the context of the scouting program.  Though I’ve been through similar training during the course of my career, the thing I’m most interested in is seeing these business principles applied in an unconventional situation.

So why is this relevant to the race for City Council?  Well, two reasons really.  The first is as an explanation as to why you’ll hear little from me for the next week.  I’ll be at a camp with no internet and little cell access.  The second, and more important, is that I’ll be further enhancing a skill set that I believe is extremely important for a city councilor.  That skill is the ability to work with and within various groups to bring the entire group along in successfully attaining their goals. This is an important element that I feel is at times absent these days at City Hall.

I wish everyone a good week and I look forward to talking with all of you again next weekend!
