Education Policy Expert Emily Schultz '05 to Present Carleton College Convocation

Education Policy Expert Emily Schultz '05 to Present Carleton College Convocation

Education policy expert Emily Schultz, Carleton Class of 2005, will present Carleton College’s weekly convocation on Friday, Apr. 26. Convocation is held from 10:50-11:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel, and it is free and open to the public. Convocations are also streamed live and can be viewed online at go.carleton.edu/convo/.

Schultz is the education policy director for Governor Robert J. Bentley of Alabama who has worked to introduce charter schools in the state. Schultz was hired by Bentley in fall 2011 in the latest chapter in a career that has included other high-profile efforts to turn around failing schools. Schultz previously worked under Michelle Rhee, who served as chancellor of the Washington, D.C. public school system from 2007 to 2010. Rhee is a highly controversial figure in Washington and in the education community; her supporters say that her focus on teacher accountability has improved test scores, while detractors accuse her of being anti-union and of “dumbing down” the curriculum. Schultz then worked for a consulting firm, Mass Insight School Turnaround Group, which helped to restructure failing school systems in cities such as Central Falls, R.I., which fired all the teachers at its high school in 2010. Under Bentley, Schultz guides Alabama’s education policy, which aims to allow charter schools in the state and tie teacher evaluations to student achievement. Schultz also serves as a liaison between the governor’s office and educational institutions of all levels.
